Mckeesport is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Mckeesport were farmers and their families who arrived around 1785 after traveling through the then-new Province of Pennsylvania. They were attracted by the fertile soil and natural resources that were available in this area. By 1802, there were twenty two settlers living in what is now Mckeesport. The first town meeting was held on March 24th, 1802 and it voted to name the town "McKeesport." In 1814, a post office was established at McKeesport and operated until 1865. The first settler to reside in what became McKeesport was John Haggerty who arrived about 1840 from Virginia. He built a log cabin on a small stream called Clear Spring near present day Oak Street and Main Street. In 1845, James Atherton bought land from Mr. Haggerty and set up an agriculture business which he continued until his death in 1902. His son James Atherton Jr., also an entrepreneur, started a clothing store on State Street which remains open today as Village Clothing Store #2 (VCS2)

The town of Mckeesport, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 and named for George Washington. The town was originally a Loyalist settlement, however, by 1800 it had become an American settlement. In 1814, the town was incorporated as a borough. During the Civil War, Mckeesport sided with the Union and made contributions to the war effort. After the war ended, the town became an agricultural community and then a manufacturing center. The population of Mckeesport increased rapidly during the 20th century and in 1959 it passed its peak population figure with over 100,000 people. However, since then it has gradually shrunk until now it has only around 60 residents remaining. The primary industry that persists in Mckeesport is agriculture which continues to be its mainstay economic force. Agricultural production includes crops such as corn, wheat, cotton, potatoes, beans and other vegetables; cattle; pigs; horses; lumber; mining products such as coal and gold; and manufactured items including clothing and appliances.
Mckeesport was founded in 1795 by James McKeague. The town became a coal mining center and incorporated as a borough in 1859. It became an independent city in 1907. In 1920, the city annexed the neighboring town of White Haven and changed its name to Mckeesport.
