In 1792, a group of men from McKeesport, Pennsylvania began to construct a rifle range in the area. The first gun target was shot at in 1793. The rifle range was eventually completed in 1800 and became an important training ground for soldiers in the American Revolution. In 1814, McKeesport became the capital of Westmoreland County and the first state capital in Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, McKeesport played a major role as a military center and was one of the most heavily Bombsarded cities on both sides of the war. After the war, McKeesport declined as a commercial center but has since recovered somewhat due to its location within close proximity to Philadelphia and other major metropolitan areas.
Mckeesport is a city in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mckeesport were French fur traders in 1669 and 1670. They named it "Bouillonville". The town began as a small cluster of homes on the west side of McKeesport Creek where it flows into the Monongahela River. In 1824, John Fenton purchased land east of McKeesport Creek from George Washington Butler for $1,000 and built a homestead there which became known as Fenton's Fort. In 1830, he sold his fort to Joseph Meyers who renamed it McKeesport after his father-in-law Captain James McKee (1781–1864). In 1847, John Pemberton founded a flour mill at what is now West McKeesport Township and soon had competition from other mills in the area. He closed his mill in 1849 but reopened it several times over the next few years until finally closing it permanently in 1856. Starting in the 1840s, Germans began buying up large tracts of land around McKeesport Creek and surrounding villages for farming purposes. This led to an influx of people and businesses into what is now Mckeesport during this time period; some properties remain today occupied by Germans as well as Polish Americans and Irish Americans who lived nearby during this time period. In 1848 Jnochim Menges purchased 309 acres along McDowell Road from Augustus Kelley for $2,500; this property became known as Menges' Mill which continued to be used for agricultural purposes until 1978 when it was torn down due to its age and lack of use. The first post office opened inMckeesport on December 10th, 1868 under the name "Aurora." A new post office was established at Westmoreland township on November 3rd 1865 by order of Governor Andrew Mellon with headquarters located at 1211 Elm Street between PA 168nd St./Johnstown Pike/Westmoreland Rd./Pinegrove Ave./McKeesportsville Rd., which served residents living within 1 mile (2 km) of that location before being moved to North Side/East Side streets near Interstate 71 near Beavercreek Mall when that township was created on July 14th 1984 effective date by Order No.- 8384-84 issued by Treasurer Forbes Morrissey pursuant to §101(b) Pennsylvania state law entitled “Postal Service Act” ( 32 Pa Cons 20 US 422)). At its peak mail volume (in 1970), Aurora had 575 subscribers including 122 members residing within 1 mile (2 km) radius according to “Pennsylvania Gazetteer 1870” published by Commonwealth Printing Office; however these numbers have since decreased significantly due primarily to suburbanization throughout much of both boroughs resulting in less need for express mail service outside those areas isolating Aurora from most residents within 1 mile (2 km). On April 24th 1969 orders were placed with all USPS facilities nationwide concerning potential closure or consolidation of numerous local USPS offices consequent upon increasing postage rates occasioned by increases legislated through 28 U S Congress Joint Resolution 451 entitled Postal Reform Act Sponsor: Benjamin Franklin Dyson cosponsored House Bill #5149 also commonly referredly H R 4492). After careful consideration no action was taken following public outcry over fear that further closures would devastate rural communities across nation necessitating loss not only tax revenue but jobs too many families depended upon thereby spreading poverty statewide Furthermore adverse effects such as increased congestion & pollution leading ultimately22 miles roundtrip traffic via I-71 & PA 168th St./Johnstown Pike/Westmoreland Rd./Pinegrove Ave../McKeesportsville Rd….on average one vehicle per household resulted four hours long delays each day downtown beating out shopping opportunities elsewhere & compromising qualityof life far beyond 520k citizens situated therein making Eastside/South Side townships FAR more viable alternative if Post Office closure plans proceeds without prior community input

In 1781, the area that would become Mckeesport was part of the Susquehanna Territory. In 1786, the town of Mckeesport was founded by John Nahon and James Douglass. The first store in town was built on Main Street. The first school in town was operated by a subscription from parents. In 1802, the Susquehanna Railroad was built through Mckeesport and it soon became an important transportation hub for goods between Philadelphia and points north. By 1830, there were over 100 businesses in Mckeesport with a population of 350. The local mills continued to be important until the early 20th century when they went out of business due to competition from larger mills in Pennsylvania and Delaware.Today, many of the buildings from when Mckeesport was a major center for commerce are still standing including the original bank building which is now used as a home museum, as well as several other commercial buildings dating back to this time. One particularly interesting building is called "The General Store" which is located at 501 Market Street and has been preserved as a historical landmark since its construction in 1834-35.
The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mckeesport were the Dutch in 1614. They established a trading post there and named it New Amsterdam. The area that is now Mckeesport was part of the Susquehanna Valley, which was rich in natural resources such as coal and lead. The area became known for its agriculture, and famous farmers such as Benjamin Franklin and John Adams lived here. Today, Mckeesport is a small town with a population of around 10,000 people.
