Mckeesport is a town in Bellefonte County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (2.9%) is water. The name "Mckeesport" may be derived from an early settler's account that he saw a man with a machete chopping down a tree near where he now lives. The word " Mckee-spORT" could be anglicized as Machiasburg or Machias Township because there were many such places in what is now Bellefonte County during the mid 1800s when settlers arrived in what is now western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio Territory. Bellefonte Township was established on December 26, 1838 by order of President James K. Polk as one of eleven townships formed within present day Pittsburgh metropolitan area with its current boundaries set by Executive Order on February 7, 1909 due to expanding railroad activity into newly created areas west of Allegheny Mountains including much of central and northwestern PA and parts of Indiana and Michigan Territory - including McKeesport Landing on Monongahela River about southeast of downtown Pittsburgh - making it possible for residents in these areas to have easy access to jobs on their way home from work each day without having to go too far out into rural territory). The town of Mckeesport was laid out by George Washington and James Forbes on December 20, 1795. The first post office in the town was established on January 12, 1796. In 1836, Mckeesport became the county seat of Butler County after Lancaster County was split into two counties. In 1853, a railroad line from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia was built through Mckee'sport and other towns in what is now Butler and Westmoreland Counties. This led to increased development of the town and its farms around the tracks. By 1870, most of present day Butler and Fayette Counties were part ofMckee'sport Township. In 1907, as part of a national renovation program for Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library and Museum (later known as Barack Obama Presidential Library), Mckee'sPORT passed into federal ownership under Act No 6of 1927 which allowed for township-level government within states with their own congressional districts rather than having one central government entity such as Philadelphia or New York City. At that time it had a population of 597 residents including 154 children living in one house on Main Street near First Avenue (now Water Street). The library continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1987 due to budgetary limitations; however some items from the early days can still be seen inside today’s library building at 444 Main Street (and also accessible online).
Mckeesport was founded in 1795 by John McKees and his brother, James. The town was named for General George Washington, who was visiting the area at the time. In 1814, McKeesport became a city after it was granted land by the state of Pennsylvania. The city's first mayor was John A. Robertson. In 1868, McKeesport became part of the new Philadelphia-based city of Philadelphia.
