In 1829, John Pugh purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along present day Easton Road from Nicholas Carpentier for $1,000 cash which he used to develop what would become known as "Pugh's Valley." This valley later served as the nucleus around which much industrial development took place throughout much of McKeesport Township during the 19th century including one notable steel producer named Bethlehem Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal) which constructed its first plant here – called "Pugh's First Steel Plant" – in 1901 just outside today's downtown core!
