In 1832, it became the capital of Monroe County after being approved by the General Assembly of Pennsylvania. The first courthouse and jail were built in Mckeesport under President George Washington's orders. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Mckeesport served as a guard post for Confederate forces moving through Monroe County to attack nearby Union positions. The town was destroyed by Union forces on September 12, 1861; all its buildings were burned down. In 1865–1966, Mckeesport participated in the adaptive reuse program for Parkland University's campus located adjacent to Parkland Memorial Stadium (now known as Beaver Valley High School). The present name of Mckeesport originated with a referendum held in 1966 to determine if there should be an official name change for the town following the successful implementation of a "name change campaign" spearheaded by then-Mayor Leo Sperling and later State Senator Don Sundquist. A majority of voters agreed with changing the name from "Monroeville" to "Mckeepsport." As part of this effort, polls were conducted throughout Monroeville and surrounding areas to gather input about whether or not they wanted their own version of what has become known as "the Keystone State." Ultimately, only Monroeville voted to switch its name; all other municipalities within Monroe County followed suit thereafter without any public vote taking place.

The town's patron saint, Blessed Francis Xavier Susterly, arrived here from Allentown on September 25th, 1798 to preach to a group of Frenchmen who were seeking refuge after the Battle of Saratoga which ended with General George Forbes' death at Saratoga Springs Battlefield on October 14th. In 1892-93, various industries such as papermaking, shoe manufacturing and small engine repair were developed within Mckeesport boundaries; however these businesses failed due to competition from larger towns such as Pittsburgh or Erie along with relocations away from this area during economic depressions that hit America during the early 21st century.
