Mckeesport is a small town in Mckelden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,441 at the 2010 census. It is the home of the University of Pittsburgh and the Steelers football team. Mckeesport is located on the West Branch Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania. The unincorporated communities of Great Meadows and Kellogg are nearby. The first Europeans to reach what is now Mckeesport were French colonists who found a swathe of land along the river's banks in 1682. English traders followed in 1703 and began exchanging goods with Indians in what would become known as "the region". In 1756, John Forbes built a Fort Pitt on the river's southern bank which served as an outpost for British forces during the Seven Years' War. As part of this conflict, Indian raids into British territories became increasingly common; one such raid took place on October 10, 1757 when about 100 natives attacked a party consisting of nine men and four boys under cover of darkness near present-day McKeesport. One man was killed, two were wounded (one fatally), and eleven children were taken prisoner including three sons of Hugh Armstrong who later became a partner in commercial ventures with George Washington Sr.. Fort Pitt was abandoned after being destroyed by French forces at Quebec City during1759 Treaty Of Paris ending The American Revolutionary War. In 1814 McClurgs Mill burned down due to engine problems whilesteamboats passed through but it reopened six years later as a grist mill powered by water from Beaver Dam Creek that today provides power for McClurgs Mill Road leading south out of town to Beaver Dam reservoir where paddlewheel boats operate year-round from May until early November making for an interesting sightseeing experience if you're lucky enough to be there during one time or another! In 1881 US Steel Corporation established its steel production plant adjacent to McClurgs Mill which continues operation to this day manufactures products such as cars bias weldedsteel sheets over 20 feet wide used for building bridges... countless other items have been produced here at Steeles Plant over time including some really innovative things like Kevlar®, copper wire®, nylon® etc..... This plant has also supplied parts for many famous landmarks around Pittsburgh including Cathedral Basilica and Three Rivers Bridge
