Mckeesport is a town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh–Antwon, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1784 by John McDonald and his family as a small trading post on the Monongahela River. In 1815, McDonald moved his business to what is now called Park Avenue and developed it into a large commercial center with cotton plantations and a slave market. In 1849, McDonald built the first public school in Mckeesport which served the town until 1865 when it became a private school. The first Presbyterian church in Mckeesport was built in 1816. In 1862, the first electric light came to Mckeesport when David Sutherlin installed an transformer on Park Avenue. A new courthouse was erected in 1907 and demolished in 2009; its replacement used parts from an old engine house that had been abandoned for years before being foundered onshore during repairs to Penn's Landing dockyards.). The post office at 5th Street and Market Street operated from 1784-1815; it was renamed Park Avenue after McDonald's home village of Park Township (now Antwon). That location served as the original seat of government for both McKeesport Township (formed in 1800) and for all of McKean County until 1865 when it became part of borough of Pittsburg/Allegheny (). In 1825, John Nash opened up a general store near present day 4th Street and Market Streets; he continued to operate this store until his death nine years later. Two other stores followed suit within two years: Ewing & Company opened up at 6th Street corner Market Street in 1830 (renamed 3rdStreet after its owner), while Biddle & Browne opened up at 9thStreet corner Market Streets around 1835 (renamed 4thStreet following their ownership). By 1840 there were ten businesses operating within one hundred yards of each other along 5th Street between Market and Sixth Streets – this area would be known as "Mckeestown." In 1861, David Sutherlin installed an electric light system over Park Avenue which made Mckeesport one of the first communities within Allegheny County to have electricity available statewide (). He also began developing what would become known as "the Strip" – a strip mall located along 5th Street between Market and Sixth streets – which quickly became one of Pittsburgh's most popular shopping areas (). This development created much employment throughout early 20th century due largely to demand for goods manufactured by nearbysteel mills then under construction downtown. Many residents who lived near these mills brought their families down here during summertime to enjoy someOf those same local attractions without having to leave their homes... During peak seasons such as Christmas or Easter there were several thousand people living across five blocks east of Fifth street working inside steel mills or visiting local shops while enjoying Protestant services conducted outdoors on Sundays morning or evening.. This paper will not discuss extensively how McCkeesport changed over time from its historically agricultural roots into one mostly industrial town during the late 19th century through most of 20th century because that topic can be adequately covered elsewhere including oral histories collected by individuals who live hereabouts or written history books like "The History Of Pittsburgh" which document more generally our city’s economic development story since 1945
