In 1849 LowerBurrell became known as "The Hub" because it served as headquarters for various branches of government in Butler, Westmoreland and other counties within what would become Pittsburgh . It reverted to its original name after 1860 when all government functions were moved to downtown Pittsburgh . Parts of lower burrell are still used today such as: Horseshoe Bend Recreation Area - which has walking, biking and running trails that lead down into the water; Four Corners Elementary School - which uses clay tablets found along the riverbanks to teach science; and Park Township Shopping Center - which offers a variety of retail shopping experiences including groceries, clothing stores, hardware stores, etc..
