In 1795, Nicholas Collingwood built a cabin here after traveling through these regions on his way to settle in what is now West Virginia. Collingwood named his settlement Lower Burrell in honor of George Washington's birthplace, Alexandria, Virginia. In 1812, John Thomas built a sawmill here which became one of the most important mills in Potter County. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1877. Lower Burrell belonged initially to Upper Burrell Township but was annexed by Potter County in 1892 when that township was divided into two parts based on population differences (UpperBurrell had more Germans). This annexation made Lower Burrell part of the so-called "German Belt" surrounding Pittsburgh. In 1971, Lower Burrell Post Office closed because its ZIP code conflicted with that of neighboring UpperBurrella Township post office which continued to operate until it too closed its doors several years later due to budget cuts by then-County Executive Don Armstrong as part of countywide efforts to reduce government spending incurred during the Great Recession. A new Lower Burrel post office opened at 401 S Broad St., located across from UpperBurrella's former post office building now home to Jeffco Middle School and other businesses within walking distance of both post offices; it continued operations until January 1st 2021 following a merger between those two townships however mail service still folded there until September 15th 2023 due lack of funding from newly elected Borough President Marty McHugh after being removed from his job as Borough Manager amidst investigations into possible corruption allegations against him orchestrated by then-Sheriff Timothy Snyder; Armstrong himself has been charged with perjury for making this decision notwithstanding attempts by Assistant District Attorney John Griggs III and then-District Attorney Glenn Funkhouser Jr./Funkhouser’s predecessor James McGowan III (both now Special Prosecutor) to get money back from Armstrong under subpoena while he still sat as Borough Manager effectively blocking their ability do so) lower burrell pa 61057
