Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was formed on April 3, 1853 from the merger of two other boroughs: Lower Burrell and Uniontown.
Lower Burrell is a small, rural town located in Potter County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Lower Burrell is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lower Burrell were farmers who arrived from Maryland and Virginia in the early eighteenth century. They built their homes around a small creek that still flows through the town today. The name "Burrell" was given to one of these early settlers by his brother-in-law, John Smith. In 1802, Baptist preacher Samuel Blair came to lower Burrell and dedicated a chapel and schoolhouse there. He also founded an agricultural society which developed into the present day Upper Cumberland Agricultural Society. In 1824, Alexander McCandless settled on a farm in what is now Lower Burrell Township and began operation of a tannery which became one of the most important businesses in the community. In 1829, he married Susannah White and moved to upper Kittanning Township where he continued to operate his tannery until his death in 1903. His wife died three years later and he never remarried. In 1857, James Ahern settled near what is now Lower Burrell with his family following his marriage to Elizabeth MacDonald in 1852. He started raising livestock and processing raw materials for local manufacturers before moving out of lower burrell into adjacent Kittanning Township when he built his own factory There are several stories about how James Ahern came up with the idea for this new industry; some say it was when he noticed that no matter how much salt water was poured ontoTextile mills then boiled down under high pressure - all resulted as big clumps or balls - it would not release so any attempt at sorting could only be effected by breaking them up into smaller pieces which again produced big balls; some say it was because when he put two sheets together from two different parts of Canada they had trouble getting them apart even after many tries) After years of experimentation (and eventually becoming successful)James Ahern's company built its first textile mill on North Main Street in 1865 - just across from present day UpperBurll Elementary School). This mill became known as "Ahern & Sons". Over time other companies followed suit: Knoppers (1866), Lewis (1867), Weir Bros.(1869), Rankins(1871), Powers(1873), etc., until finally J.[ustin] L.] Macdonald bought out Ahern's company along with most of its affiliates in 1898 The Macdonald Company continues to be one of Pittsburgh's leading manufacturing conglomerates To this day Lower Burrel has numerous heritage organizations such as artist colony/school (founded 1957), Historical Society (founded 1902), Presbyterian church/services (founded 1946) as well as various craftsman shops including bakery/carpet maker operated by Grady family since 1915 Atkinson Manufacturing Company Limited manufactured motorcycles between 1929-1974 Other local manufactures include Checker tractors beginning 1935

In 1815, John Lower moved to Upper Burrell and died there in 1847. His son, Reverend John Lower Jr., took over the family business until his death in 1927. The town of Lower Burrell was incorporated on December 4, 1929.
