Lower Burrell was founded in 1795 by farmers and traders from nearby Lancaster. In 1824, the town got its name from Colonel John Lower who donated land for a Presbyterian church and school in Lower Burrell. The village was originally laid out as a township on November 3, 1825, by order of General James Ketchum after he surveyed Butler County for the US government. On July 15, 1830, it was made an additional borough in Butler County with a population of 350 residents. As less populous communities were added to Butler County over time, Lower Burrell's status as a borough decreased until it became simply a hamlet within Butler county with no official representation until 1884 when it had its own postmaster and first phone line. On January 1, 1899 Lower Burrell merged with neighboring Westmoreland Township to form the new Borough of UpperBurrell which still exists today as an independent municipality within the present-day Butler County government. In 1907 UpperBurrell lost its independence again when it merged into what would become known as lower burrell Township effective January 1st that year under then current laws governing municipalities within Butler County - since then all municipalities have been named after places within their respective counties or townships

Lower Burrell is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,160 at the 2010 census. It lies to the east of Pittsburgh and north of Scranton. Lower Burrell began as a Lenape village on the Susquehanna River, but was abandoned in 1681 because of English pressure. In 1784 it became part of the British colony of Westmoreland and remained so until its evacuation during the American Revolution in 1783. From 1814 to 1829 it was part of the Mexican state of Tejas. It was transferred from Tejas to Butler County on October 14, 1829. Lower Burrell post office opened in 1827 and closed in 1964. Lower Burrell has an early history that can be traced back to when Lenape chief Powhatan led his people from their original village on the Susquehanna River near present-day Monroeville Township (now Scranton) some time before 400 BC. When European settlers arrived in this area around 1800 they found little land suitable for agriculture and started developing mills and other enterprises instead; these early pioneers were mostly Scottish Protestant Scotsmen who brought over tools, flourishes such as kilns, ovens, axes, saws and chisels with them when they settled hereabouts or brought over families with them during their long journey across America’s continent beginning about 1700 ATC (the year after New Netherland became independent from Great Britain). One such pioneer was John Prentice who built one such mill which still exists today just south of lower burrell along crosstown PA routes 142/143 (formerly US Route 611) known as Old Mill Road or Timberlane Rd./Old Pittsburgh Pike). George Washington Carver also visited this area while he was performing Agricultural Research at Tuscarora Island off Canonsburg Peninsula minutes before his inauguration as President on January 20th 1789 ATC – making him one among many Americans who traveled to this region during this era including Thomas Jefferson who resided for some time at Easton prior to his inauguration ATC; James Knerr whose Tavern stand survives right next door across Steeles Avenue southeast corner Beaverdam Road which served as one stopover en route between carters home at Westmoreland Manor Plantation upriver near Pottsville Landing where he raised cattle off Abram Island – all located within what is now Lower Burrell Park – during his residency there from April through November 1790-1793Footnote2 What followed are centuries filled with growth opportunities for farmers hereabouts resulting primarily due to factors such as climate change related floods etc.; however sporadic natural disasters like major earthquakes have also played a role including devastating DeSoto Flood Event which occurred September 10th 1861 ATC approximately 3 miles northwest/southwest of Lower Burrell just past current day WYO 757922 - causing widespread damage both upstream & downstream especially along river banks where water levels reached high points sometimes reaching above average levels creating silt deposits equivalent to several feet deep underlying much older agricultural soils etc.; finally following Hurricane Andrew’s powerful landfall southwestward along I-70 corridor circa August 1992 ATC caused extensive flooding pretty much throughout lower burrell park resultant blocking access roads leading into town thereby completely submerging businesses downtown & elsewhere particularly affecting recreation areas using those same streets closed by way then subsequently reopened only weeks later post impact providing residents plentyof temporary rideside sheltering alternativesduring those initial weeks flood conditions although fortunately no loss or human fatalities resulted Note: For purposes hereinbelow “Lower Burrella” shall include all portions lying east & northeast thereof lying within Butler & Greene Counties therefore encompassing: Monroeville Twp., Beaverdam Twp., Scranton Twp., Easton Twp., Pottsville Landing Twp., Bloomingdale Twp., Westmoreland Manor Pltn./Abram Islnt./area bounded by Beaverdam Rd./Steeles Ave./Doris St.-to-White Oak Rd.-to-Wyoming Ave.-all inclusive) In less than two years following its founding in 1784 LowerBurrel had increased its population by twenty three percent becoming one of the most rapidly growing communities west of Allegheny Mountains! By 1800 fewer than fifty dwellings existed but within five years more than two hundred homes had been erected with numerous stores,hardware stores propelling trade further stimulating industry! By 1830 nearly three hundred dwellings had been erected forming what is now known as "TheVillage". The Lower Burrell area of Pennsylvania was once a part of the Monongahela valley. The community, which is located in Adams County, was first established in 1845. It was named for Captain John Burrell, a British officer who fought during the American Revolution. The community took off after it began to produce oil and natural gas. In 1954, Lower Burrell became an incorporated town. In 1978, it merged with nearby UpperBurrell to form the present-day township of LowerBurrell.
