It is named after Colonel George Washington Lower and his family who settled there in 1798. The original market place was called "Burrell's Ford" because Colonel Lower had a wagon road built through the forest to carry goods to and from Pittsburgh. In 1853 the town was renamed Upper Burrell after General Philander Chase Lower who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became Army Chief of Staff under Ulysses S. Grant. Lower Burrell has been known for its lace mills since 1824 when John Wilkinson started making lace at his mill on White Street. By 1850, lace production had become so important that UpperBurrell Silk Mills was established on Banksville Road just outside of town to supply both markets with high-quality silk cloths from lower Burma (Myanmar). Lace industry declined during World War II but regained some importance following the war as a result of new synthetic materials becoming available; however, it has now largely disappeared as a result of technological advances and competition from other industries such as apparel manufacturing and software development. The local school system provides education for children up to grade 12; one municipal facility houses five schools: two K–8 schools (grades PreK–5), one middle school (6–8), one high school (9–12), and one special needs magnet school which offers academic programs specific to students with disabilities or those with special interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). There are also three churches: First Presbyterian Church serving congregations located along White Street between Market Square West and High Street; Second Baptist Church located on North Main Street south of US Route 422; Third Methodist Church which services congregations located east of US Route 422 near Beaver Dam Creek
Lower Burrell was first settled in 1781 by John McGowan and his family. The town of Lower Burrell was established in 1827, and it became a borough in 1887. In 1992, the town of Lower Burrell merged with the borough of Fayette to form the new borough of Fayetteville.
