Lower Burrell is located on the border of Butler and Lawrence counties. The first settler in what became Lower Burrell was John Gibson in 1798. The present-day community was organized as a borough by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on December 5, 1875. At that time it consisted of just a few hundred residents and lay within Butler County only; however, within thirty years Upper Burrell had also been incorporated and LowerBurrell began to grow significantly. By 1910 its population had reached 2,000 people and it has continued to grow throughout the years since then reaching 3,500 by 2000. There are several reasons for such growth including proximity to larger cities such as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (just 15 minutes away), easy access to education and healthcare facilities,and topographic advantages including abundant woods and streams which provide ample water resources for agriculture as well as being close to important industrial areas like steel production and aluminum smelting plants. A number of businesses have anchored this growing community over the years including: PNC Bank (the largest bank in Butler County), Verizon Wireless/CPAC Communications Company (a provider of wireless services), Dunkin' Donuts/Dunkin' Donuts USA Inc., Ford dealership (which opened its first store here in 1970), Smith's Pharmacy & Health Care Center (which serves residents from both Lower Burrell and UpperBurrell) among others.
