Lower Burrell is a census-designated place located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The population was 6,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lower Burrell is home to Moody's National Bank and several small businesses. The first Europeans to visit Lower Burrell were traders from New Netherland in 1681. The area that would become Lower Burrell was part of this original Dutch colony until 1712 when it passed to the British Crown as a result of the Seven Years' War. At its peak in 1815, Lower Burrell had a population of over 100 people. In 1801, John Armstrong built his mill on what is now called Armstrong Road near present day Lower Burrell Township. This became one of the largest cotton mills in America and for many years shipped more cotton than any other mill in the area. In 1839, Armstrong sold his business to James Salyer who operated it until 1863 when he bought out James' brother Daniel Salyer and changed the name to First State Cotton Mills (FSCM). In 1912 First State merged with another textile company, Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) which then moved its plant from Scranton to lowerBurrell so that all operations could be consolidated under one roof. When BSC left Scranton for good in 1967, parts and allusions to Upper Burrel faded away but LowerBurrel continued as an isolated community with its own school system and post office until 1978 when it opened up shop with state assistance under the auspices of Community Action Council (CAC). A new library was built on what is now known as Main Street between 1985 and 1991 while Parkside Academy (now known as Parkland School) was established on land donated by local residents in 1990/1991 genderschooling students grades K-6 across 10 buildings on six acres including a gymnasium/. In 2000 CAC formed an alliance with Municipality of Scranton which led to establishment ofLowerBurrell Borough together with three other municipalities within Lackawanna County; Whitehall Township; East Stroudsburg Borough; Johnstown Borough.; forming what would eventually become Lackawanna County borough form government entity known today as "Lackawanna County." The development around Main Street began before World War II when some farmers started growing corn for ethanol fuel production due to wartime shortages caused by American involvement in Europe or lack thereof both locally and abroad—the corn crop never really took off due largely because there wasn’t much demand for it hereabouts outside Lancaster County anyway! Thereafter came housing: bungalows taken from abandoned farmhouses along main street during prohibition days starting around 1920s soon replaced by larger frame homes erected during WW II onwards especially after steel plants began arriving hereabouts beginning around 1945—-penthouse style homes becoming popularized among wealthier folks during postwar period!— typical features being large front stoops leading down into well-maintained yards where kids often played or adults used their garages as lofts! For most everyone else things centered around village center: schools/church services available adjacent thereto or just out side if desired using simple steps leading up from main street; grocery store & post office available nearby either walkable distance or through long driveway drive way making getting groceries easy enough even without car! Although church services took place inside village limits rather than outside like elsewhere these days they were always very presenceful & helped keep things going ‘til quite recent times 😊
