Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania is a town located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,765 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. Lower Burrell was established in 1796 and incorporated as a village in 1828. The current name of the town comes from Captain John Lower's "burrell" (a type of cornhusk) farmstead which sat on a rise overlooking the creek that now bears its name. The first settler in what is now Lower Burrell was Captains John Lower and James Hightower who arrived there in 1796. Theytook up land on what is now known as Upper Burrell Road and built some small homes and store buildings before proceeding to fertile farmland where they began to plant crops and build barns. In 1828, when LowerBurrell became a village it purchased from Colonel Robert Miller all of the land between Lebanon Creek and Bigelow’s Brook which forms today’s eastern border of LowerBurrella Township. This purchase enabled LowerBurrella to become an important local center for trade with neighboring townships including Northampton, Ambler and Whitehall while also providingantage for growing industry such as papermaking and manufacturing products such as shoes and clothing. In 1881 Lower Burrell had a post office with a population of 514, and a church with 2 churches and 12 pews. In 1937 Lower Burrell had only 363 residents living in 158 houses which made it one of the poorest communities in the area when compared to other rural areas of Fayette County. However, during World War II Lower Burrell became an important manufacturing center for munitions due to its location on Canonsburg Road just outside of downtown Pittsburgh. After the war ended and production petered out, LowerBurrel's economy began to grow thanks to new businesses such as Applebees and Wawa opened up along Canonsburg Road which helped revive the community's business climate. Today, UpperBurrell is still considered a more colorful side of lower burrell while LowerBurrel remains home to some of the most poverty- stricken neighborhoods within Fayette County
Lower Burrell Township was organized in 1831 and named for Colonel John Lower, a Pennsylvania Revolutionary War veteran. The township grew rapidly during the early 1800s, due to its location on the Susquehanna River. In 1847, Lower Burrell became part of the newly formed Allegheny County and was annexed by the city of Pittsburgh.
