Lower Burrell was founded in 1794 and incorporated as a borough in 1806. The name "Lower Burrell" originated from an early settler named Brown who called the site "Buriwell" because he found a bog there. In 1839, Lower Burrell became a town after it Merchants and others petitioned for incorporation as such. The first mayor of Lower Burrell was Samuel Rittenhouse. Streets in the town were named after prominent citizens or their families: Burtonsville Road (later Boulevard), Easton Avenue (later Easton Street), Cumberland Avenue (later Cumberland Street), High Street (later High Street South), and Nagle Road (now Northumberland Avenue). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.92%, is water. As of the 2010 census,[1] there were 2,813 people residing in Lower Burrell Borough; 1,955 households were made up of individuals and 711 households consisted of two or more people sharing one bed/room; 3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older; 11% were under 5 years old; 14% were between the ages of 5 and 9 years old; 24% were 10 to 14 years old; 26% were 15 to 19 years old; 23% were 20 to 24 years old; 28% were 25 to 29 years old; 10% were 30 to 34 year olds; 6% are 35 to 44 year olds, and 3% are 45 or older. Lower Burrell was named for Captain John Lower and his family who settled there in 1788. Lower Burrell has been inhabited by humans since prehistory. Paleo-Indians may have hunted and killed mammoths here during the Ice Age. In 1788, Captain John Lower and his family arrived in this area from Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania to survey land for a new estate they were founding on what is now lower Burrell's east side. Their home still stands today as a nice 2 story white frame cottage with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on a .5 acre lot adjacent to one of the first public leagues in Butler County (then called "The Valley"). Captain John's son James also came to this area about that time and began farming land around present day Upper Burrell which he named after his father's home village of Netherburley (now Northumberland). James later married Sarah Stanislaus who was also from Newtown Township and their children included Colonel Samuel Stanislaus (1813-1893) who served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 1868-1870; General James A. Garfield (1881-1939), Vice President of the United States From 1901 until 1925; Mrs. George Washington Carver (1887-1976), cofounder of Archer Daniels Midland Company; Drs.: Lewis Hillyer Mangel & Harry Laughlin, both natives of Philadelphia; Reverend Milton Sacks (died 1982), Jesuit Priest/Doctorate holder at Fordham University School of Medicine New York City; Drs.: Joseph Nelligan & Maurice Bendixen both natives of Utica NY USMC Vietnam War Veterans Affairs Medical Officer Corps - Korea 1951 - 1955 This paper will focus more specifically on one particular person or group associated with Lower Burrell through its history: Myron Eversitt Sr., an American businessman and philanthropist born in 1926 in nearby Oakland Township
