Coal mining ended shortly afterwards but industry has returned with truckloads of immigrants from all over the world coming to work in manufacturing such as aluminum cans and appliances since World War II. Today Lower Burrell is home to many retirees either retire or visit for short stays during their summer vacations; there are also numerous locals who commute into Scranton for work each day although most people only stay one week at a time in this sleepy little town which is located on Route 8 about 20 minutes northeast of Scranton's downtown core on I-24W/PA 287E

Lower Burrell is a small town that has been around since 1821. It is named after General JohnBurrell who fought in the American Revolution and was killed during the war. Lower Burrell started as a small farming community and soon became known for its tanning industry which produced fine leather products such as boots, shoes and cases. Leather production stopped around 1930 but some remnants remain today as a local tourist attraction called Tanner's Tannery Museum and Shop. The history of Lower Burrell can be traced back to 1821 when General JohnBurrell fought in the American Revolution and was killed during the war. He left behind a large fortune which helped start Lower Burrell's development as a small farming community. In 1831, Newbold & McGill built the first sawmill in lower Burrell and it continued to produce lumber until 1870 when it closed down due to competition from other mills in Lehigh County. In 1881, Durgin Bros.' grocery store opened up on Main Street in Lower Burrella and it remains one of the oldest stores still open today in town. This store also served as an important early cultural resource for Upper Burrella residents with its wide availability of books, music and other forms of entertainment before television became popular across America. In 1927, Pillsbury Doughnuts opened up shop on US Highway 322 nearby which would continue to serve customers until 2004 when it closed down due to economic difficulties.
The Lower Burrell area was first settled by the Pocono people in the early 1800s. The area became part of Pennsylvania in 1792 after George Washington and his army won a battle at Braddock's Landing. The area was originally named Westmoreland County, but was renamed Lower Burrell Township in 1824. In 1827, Lower Burrell had a school and a post office.
