Lower Burrell is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,043 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lower Burrell was founded in 1792 and incorporated as a village in 1825. The community name means "lower" because it was located on the banks of the Allegheny River. The first settler in Lower Burrell was James McGill, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Scotland. He purchased land along the river and named his new settlement after his brother-in-law, John Lowery, who had accompanied him to America. The name of lower may have been inspired by the low quality of water available for irrigation near modern-day Upper Burrell. The early years of LowerBurrell's existence were difficult; floods and skirmishes with Native Americans plagued the community for many years. However, by 1825, Thanks to advances in transportation and agriculture, Lower Burrell had become one of Butler County's most prosperous towns. residents built churches and schools, started businesses such as grocery stores and barber shops, and participated in civic activities such as providing support to local militias during wars against Native American tribes. In 1984 Lower Burrells celebrated its 400th anniversary with a series of events including an agricultural fair attended by representatives from around Butler County; a parade down Market Street; an open house at Main Street Baptist Church; and a picnic on the banks of the Allegheny River downstream fromLowery Hall Schoolhouse

In 1932, Lower Burrell was discontinued as a civil township and became part of the newly formed Borough of Upper Burrell.
