The Lower Burrell Ammunition Company was founded in 1868 by John G. Low and his brother, George Low. The company produced ammunition for the British army and navy. In 1899 the company merged with Armoury Ammunition Company to form Armoury-Lowe & Co., Ltd. After World War II the company became a subsidiary of Browning Arms Corporation. In 1962 Armoury-Lowe & Co., Ltd. was acquired by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which renamed it Winchester Ammo Corporation. The company continued to produce ammunition under this name until 1992 when it merged with DuPont Pioneer Corp. to become DuPont-Winchester Ammunition corporation.

In 1806 it became part of the newly formed Huntingdon County. A post office called LowerBurrell was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1923. The community has been home to a variety of businesses and industries over the years, including a paper mill from 1892-1922; two breweries from 1915-1959; three weaving mills from 1925-1968; four shoe factories from 1922-1967; and five agricultural production facilities from 1967-2008. In 2008 Lower Burrell Township sold its assets to PennDOT for $5 million dollars to provide new infrastructure for the township such as a expressway, streetlights, and water main replacement projects. Additionally, PennDOT will also construct an interchange with I-95 on Park Avenue which will connect Lower Burrell with other communities in southern Huntingdon County including Altoona and Johnstown.

Burrell was founded in 1789 by John Burrell and his wife, Susannah. The town is named after John's father, Burrell Bros., a shipping business. In 1811, the town was renamed for General Andrew Jackson. In 1835, Burrell became the first municipality in Butler County to be established. From 1840 through 1845, the population of Burrell fluctuated between 350 and 400 people; however, due to an influx of immigrants from Eastern Pennsylvania and Northern Ireland during that time period, the population increased to over 1,000 by 1850. By 1860, burrell had a population of 2,500 residents. In 1865-1866 burrell experienced a flood which destroyed many homes and businesses including the courthouse and jail. In 1870-1871 burrell had another flood which ruined many homes again but this time there were no fatalities as most people evacuated before it could reach them. In 1875-1876 burrell experienced a drought which caused some crop failures but overall no major damage took place because of it; however this period also saw an increase in prostitution as farmers who couldn't get access to water started selling sex services to local women in order generate income. After years of growth and progress throughout its historyBurrel slowly began to decline starting around 1950 as more businesses closed down or moved out while new ones sprang up catering only to rural areas due to market demand rather than providing quality goods or services that would have attracted locals like Burrell did in earlier times
