Lebanon, Pennsylvania is a small borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The borough was created on October 15, 1870 from portions of Union Township and Clearfield Township. The first settler in Lebanon was John Patton who arrived in 1784. He and his family were two of the original settlers on what is now South Lebanon Road. In 1825, Captain John Hartsock founded the town of Hanna to which Lebanon belonged. On April 29, 1826, both towns were combined into one municipality under the name of Lebanon-Hanna Borough and it has been said that this merger may have been done because Captain Hartsock wanted to create a community with close connections to Pittsburgh so that he could better compete with other businesses within the city limits. In 1892 when prohibition began to be enforced in America, local farmers organized a group called "The Liquor League" to fight prohibition efforts by federal agents assigned to enforce liquor laws throughout America. The group purchased an arsenal as well as several hundred acres (30 km²) of land east of present day Pittsburgh for use as their secretariat or headquarters should they be successful in repealing Prohibition nationwide through their efforts. Their success at repeal led them to increase their acreage holdings even more and they became known as "The Liquor Lords". In 1907 they merged with neighbouring Clearfield Township and incorporated as a borough under the name "Lebanon". On July 10th 1915 during World War I Confederate forces attacked nearby Fort Mifflin unawares and successfully captured it before withdrawing back into occupied Tennessee without committing any hostilities against American troops stationed there; this event is also sometimes cited as being the beginning of World War I in Lebanon proper although no record exists stating such a thing existed then or does today. After the war ended Lebanese soldiers continued serving US military forces until 1946 when all Lebanese military service ceased except for compulsory agricultural work performed by men between ages eighteen and fifty-five years old for state-owned companies which continued until 1970; however due to political changes following independence from Syria in 1975 all male citizens over fifty-five years old were required by law to retire from public service effective January 1st 1976 regardless if they had served during WWII or not according To this law only citizens born after 1945 are considered refugees/asylees now living here while others left shortly thereafter prior to 1975 legal change - some returned later while many never crossed over An additional 5% quota still remains today for those who want it though most chose not do so opting instead go back home rather than live here indefinitely like many did before 1978 when quotas expired altogether finally making us what we are today
