In 1814-1815, during the Mexican-American War, American troops fought at Battle Of Monterrey near present-day Philadelphia. One soldier died as a result of this battle and another was critically injured but recovered. After the war ended, President James Ketchum appointed Colonel Robert Grier as commanderof American forces in Delaware County to oversee Reconstruction efforts following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. During this time period many people left rural areas for better opportunities in Philadelphia or other cities because laws had been changed allowing men to own property without feudal obligations such as serfdom or debt slavery
