Lebanon, Pennsylvania is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the seat of Lebanon County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,611. The city is located in southeastern Pennsylvania on the Susquehanna River east of Pittsburgh. The first European settlers in what is now Lebanon were Scottish Presbyterians who arrived in 1772. They named their village "Lebanon" after their home country, Leithshire, Scotland. The first settler to purchase land here was James Caldwell from Ulster in 1814. In 1830, John Glenn settled on a tract near what is now Elmwood Avenue and Huntingdon Street and built his house there still standing today as Glenn House Museum (now known as Gettysburg State Park). He was one of the original promoters of Manifest Destiny which aimed to expand westward across America. In 1834, General Andrew Jackson sent Major General David Dixon to survey land for the United States army at this location and Dixon purchased 640 acres from James Caldwell for $30 per acre ($ current prices). This area became known as Fort Monmouth before it was renamed Beirut by President George Washington in 1794 during Indian Wars when he evacuated British forces from North AMERICA following victory at Saratoga Springs over American soldiers under General Howe. After independence was granted us by Great Britain in 1776, Fort Monmouth reverted back to its previous name - Beirut - until it changed again to Fort Monmouth Heights after hostilities ceased between our countries following Federal Creek Campaign (1812-1813). In 1824-25 when Lebanon County was created from part of Allegheny County - including parts of inner Philadelphia - Fort Monmouth Heights became its capital. For many years until consolidation with Allegheny County in 1907/08 Beirut had been an unofficial county seat because no courthouse could be erected due to lack of funds or legal challenges brought against its status as an unincorporated community outside the jurisdiction of any county government . On July 1st 1908 "Lebanon", along withFaversham Township (northwest), Meadville Borough (southwest) and Westmoreland Borough (south) were consolidated into one unitary government called "Allegheny County". From then until 2007 when effort began by some residents led by local historian Dr.. Randy Barnett that has seen former boroughs such as Meadville annex themselves into Lebanon City resulted in annexation being approved by both Allegheny County Commissioners Court & Mayor Robert Youngblood – Lebanese citizens have exercised their right thru referendum process to keep their communities separate While most people know Lebanon primarily through its connection with Congressman Bob Casey's time spent here while running for office or through related events such as Memorial Day Parade or Independence Day Celebrations – much larger numbers are also aware or have at least heard about what takes place here every day; namely water recycling & stormwater management systems installed throughout all dwellings within Municipality; continuous improvement program continuing unabated despite consistently high crime rates; minority owned businesses thriving despite limited access to banking services Lebanon's rich history goes back nearly two centuries – starting with Scotch Presbyterian missionaries arriving just beyond present-day Pittsburgh limits searching for new religious grounds after fleeing persecution from Glasgow’s High School Congregationists days earlier that year . By 1800 almost all Scots living east of Pittsburgh hadigrated . In those early days there wasn’t even a town hall! Lebanon, Pennsylvania was a small town in the state of Pennsylvania from 1824 to 1861. The community was located in Cumberland County, about 25 miles north of Philadelphia and 10 miles east of Lebanon. It was named for the Lebanese people who lived there at the time. Neighboring towns were Bridgeport, Bethlehem, and Doylestown. The first settler in Lebanon was George Witherspoon. He built a cabin on the property that he now owns and operates as a Bed & Breakfast inn called "The Gables". Witherspoon's father had also been born in Lebanon. In 1826, John Potter started farming near present-day Lebanon with his brother-in-law Daniel Boone. The Potters founded what is now Burlington Township in 1827. In 1829, Andrew Jordon moved to Lebanon from Allentown and began trading goods with traders along the Delaware River. by 1830, he had built a store on Main Street which became known as "Andrew's Corner." The store continued to be operated until 1840 when it burned down due to an arson problem. In 1830, James Buchanan served as Mayor of Philadelphia; during his term, he laid out Lafayette Square on Market Street between Broad and York Streets . On December 9th 1830 (the day after Christmas), Buchanan presented a petition signed by 50 citizens of Philadelphia calling for independence from Great Britain In 1840 John Smeaton settled in Lebanon and opened up a grocery store known as "The Hermitage" which remained open until 1865 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by sunstroke
