Lebanon, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people in Lebanon. The population grew to 1,872 by the 2010 census and to 2,045 by the 2016 census. Lebanon is one of six townships in Lackawanna County. It is bordered by Scranton Township to the north and east; Potter Township to the south; and Saugerties Township to the west. The township was organized on February 14, 1828 as part of a larger consolidation of localities in eastern Lackawanna County. On March 5th of that year it merged with Potter Township and Saugerties Township to form what would become Lebanon Borough(). Lebanon was founded on a mill site near present-day Clearfield. The first settler arrived in 1830 and named his new settlement Clearfield Mills after his milling assets were donated by James Clinton Alexander III., son of James Clinton Alexander II., owner of Pottersville Mill (now Scranton). By 1835 Clearfield had a post office and two stores - one run by John Ahern and one operated by Elijah Whitehead (). In 1838 Factory Creek ran through Lebanon from Clearfield into Potter Township providing future water power for industry until it was diverted under US 10 sometime after World War II. In 1850 Lebanon had three churches - Presbyterian (with its main building on Market Street), Methodist (built about 1860), and Baptist (originally built about 1830). In 1865 both denominations united under Oneida Church which still has its original building on Market Street (). Other settlers followed soon after including Quakers (), Germans (), Swiss () (!), Dutchmen (), Poles (), Italians (), Lithuanians (), Scots-Irishers () etc.). During Reconstruction following the American Civil War many Lebanese refugees began arriving in Pennsylvania as part of President Abraham Lincoln’s Johnson Plan called “Operation Crossroads” – seeking work or education opportunities outside their home countries while awaiting their turn for political asylum inside America. Many settled within what became Lebanon Borough(). The borough had an all white pre-war population of just over 200 residents when news reached America that General Robert E Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 – ending more than five years bloody war between Confederate States Of America & Union States Of America . After Reconstruction voting laws were rewritten following passage of the Twenty fifth Amendment to United States Constitution most Lebanese voters chose not to registered for elections due to fear they would be deported if they did so (). However some did register who then participated in local government services such as taxation () until 1994 when all Lebanese citizens were required to vote regardless their residency status (). Today only those living legally within Lebanon are allowed participation in municipal government services . Lebanon, Pennsylvania history started in 1784 when a group of men and women from Lebanon Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, founded the first European settlement in what is now Lebanon Township. The original settlers were called the "Citizens" and they built a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The first official record of Lebanese Settlement was made in 1787 when an Act of Congress set up a committee to organize western Pennsylvania into counties. In 1801, Lebanon Township was formed from part of Huntingdon County and it became one of the original ninety-eight townships in Philadelphia County. In 1828, Lebanon Township was reorganized as a borough with nine wards. On February 14th, 1924, upon request by the Borough Council, the Pennsylvania General Assembly granted townshiphood to Lebanon City which had been proposed by Mayor Harry Swayne. On October 1st 1903, Beirut City annexed two adjoining villages: Northumberland Heights and Southumberland Heights. When Northumberland Heights merged with neighboring Southumberland Heights in 1984 to form United Center Village (UCH), then known as Arlington Heights Addition., this change also applied to UCH*. The name "Lebanon" originated from two places – Lajpat Rai or "The Mountain" because it was where Islam began its spread across Europe while Baalbek means 'House of God' or 'Church'. The other place mentioned is Bayt al-Hussein which means 'the site where Elijah's family used to live'. Therefore Bayt al-Hussein meant either 'house at the foot of Mount Carmel' or 'site near Lajpat Rai'. Since these two sites were close together it made sense for them both to be called Beirut since that's where Muslims came from originally! When America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, many people decided to move southward so they could join their new country and start anew. Of course there were some who stayed behind – some like John Armstrong who built a home on Cherry Hill Road near present day Lansdale but his property remained undeveloped until 1965 when he donated it to University Park District *. In 1976 Bethlehem Steel Corporation leased land east of I-676 for manufacturing purposes *.* However steel production did not begin until 1983 when Willard Krantz purchased 10 acres adjacent to UIC Campus*.* By 2001 over 100 businesses had been established within 3 blocks radius including 20 restaurants*,.* With such innovative technology nodes located throughout downtown Lebanon*,.* startup companies have proliferated making business opportunities more difficult for others than ever before!
