The community was founded in 1820 by Scottish immigrants as a logging and farming village named Playa del Oro. It grew rapidly during the 19th century because of its natural resources: coal and oil shale in the hills to the south, timber on several hilltops to the north, and water from wells near present-day Lombard Street. In 1881 when a railroad was built through Butler County, Playa del Oro became an important depot for goods arriving from Pittsburgh and other points east. By 1920 Lebanon had become an agricultural center with over 100 farms and 3 sawmills; it also boasted a library (opened in 1902), post office (1882), Baptist church (1884), jail (1888), two schools (grades 1 through 12) and several businesses including millsinery shops, a flour mill and two hotel/motel complexes. During World War II Lebanon was known as "the haven of choice" for American soldiers who were needed upriver at San Diego or along the Pacific coast; after 1945 it declined significantly in population but has kept many buildings from being destroyed by fire or neglect since then. Nowadays some faint reminders of that time can still be seen such as evidence of old steel infrastructure near Lombard Street where factories once flourished – this remnant is now part of what forms part of Old Lebanon State Park just outside town limits. Over the years, OLU has graduated many notable individuals including Ulysses S Grant, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D Roosevelt Jr.). In 1955, Lebanese-born Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel moved his synagogue from Northampton to Beirut after being denied entry into Philadelphia due to his ethnicity (he later moved it back). Today there are over 350 Orthodox Jews living in Beirut while there are also several religious communities located throughout Lancaster County including Congregation Asher Hirschmanof Germantown Valley; Congregation Shearith Israel; Congregation B’nai Israel; First Hebrew Congregational Synagogue Of Bethlehem; Yeshurun Torah School & Jewish Day School And Talmud Torah Jaffa – all located within walking distance of each other on main streets in downtown Beirut!
