The Lansdowne community is located in the Lehigh Valley, approximately 20 miles north of Philadelphia. It was settled by Germans in the early 1800s and became a center of local agricultural production. The town was incorporated in 1872 and rapidly grew as a manufacturing center for lightbulbs, radios and other electronics products. In 1925, Lansdowne became the home of General Motors’ American Light Manufacturing Company. The factory produced both small batch and large volume light bulbs, radios and other electronics products until it closed in 1984. The town experienced a resurgence beginning in the 1990s as a result of popular tourist attractions including its rich history and renowned Research & Development Center (R&D). Today, Lansdowne is still an important cultural and economic center within the Lehigh Valley.

Lansdowne is home to Lansdownshire Elementary School and L’Anse-aux-Meadows Resort & Spa. Lansdowne was founded in 1799 by Captain John Lambert and his wife Sally Horsfall Lambert as a hunting station on what is now Vermont Avenue in rural Lackawanna County. They named their new settlement after Lord Lansdowne, an English nobleman who had helped finance American independence. At first the Lambert family divided their time between Philadelphia and Lansdowne; but when Captains Lambert died in 1807 and Sally married an American, they decided to move permanently to join him there. The first store opened in 1809 on Main Street. By 1840 the community had four churches: Presbyterian (built 1810), Methodist (1811), Baptist (1827), and Congregationalist (founded 1839). In 1860 the town was renamed for General George Washington during the American Civil War as part of General Orders No. 8 of that year issued by President Abraham Lincoln recognizing Confederate General Robert Ewell's military victory at Gettysburg over Ulysses S Grant's army that summer Day1 In 1870, while still under Union control, local German settlers began moving into the area concentration camps were established at nearby Snookville which continued until 1945 without significant interruption other than some key personnel changes The next major change came with Prohibition which made drinking illegal across all of Pennsylvania starting January 1st 1912alcohol production restarted only gradually throughout prohibition due to lack of resources however since repeal many bars have reopened including one located just outside town limits

Lansdowne began as a small community on the eastern border of what is now York and Lawrence counties and was named for Captain John Lansdowne, who helped survey the land in this region in 1795. The first stores were built here in 1819 by Major John Fenton and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Vail. In 1830, Colonel John Salkyns donated land to make up what is now Lansdowne Township. The township was organized on November 3, 1833, when it was split from York County. On July 15, 1848, it became one of five townships within the new Allegheny County when that county was created from parts of Lawrence and York counties. On January 1, 1861, Lansdowne became an incorporated village with a mayor and vice president form its government under Pennsylvania law; however representatives from the town voted not to incorporation due to their objections to being included outside of Pittsburgh's city limits. Withstood challenges by other municipalities within Allegheny County to secede during the American Civil War (Lansdowne voted not to secede), Lansdownside became an independent borough on December 12th 1865 after more than two years of consideration following its merger with neighboring South Side Borough which also petitioned for independence but lost out to Pittsburgh on October 16th 1865 despite "overwhelming" votes in favor of secession by both boroughs.
