Lansdowne is a small town in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown- Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lansdowne was founded in 1795 by General Sir John Forbes and his family as a small farming community on the east side of Susquehanna River. The Forbeses were farmers who also operated sawmills and gristmills in the area. They began to build churches and schools in Lansdowne in 1824 and 1830, respectively. In 1827, they donated land for a college in Allentown which became known as Queen's University (later Penn State). The townspeople built their first school on Main Street in 1829. In 1840, they donated land for a cemetery which now contains over 60 gravesites from various families in Lansdowne. Lansdowne was incorporated as a borough on July 1, 1851, from portions of Easton and Widmertowns townships. On February 3rd of that year, it had an enrollment of just 154 residents but grew quickly with its proximity to larger communities such as Allentown and Bethlehem-Easton. On December 8th of that year it passed an act incorporating as a city under the name "Allentown." On January 15th of 1865 all sections (eastside including Lansdale) were annexed into Philadelphia due to lack of population growth elsewhere within Clearfield County or within Philadelphia itself since no new development had taken place there since antecedents left for good over 150 years prior - thus completely merging with neighboring municipalities without any referendum taking place!
