In 1835, a group of men from Lansdowne, Pennsylvania founded the first optometric society in the United States. In 1865, they donated their library to the University of Pennsylvania and renamed it the College of Optometry. The school continued its work in optics until 1959 when it merged with The University of Pittsburgh to form Pittsburg State University. In 1971, Pittsburg State University changed its name to Penn State Hershey School of Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences. Finally, in 1998, Penn State Hershey School of Veterinary Medicine and Health Sciences merged with Temple University to createPenn State Harrisburg University. Lansdowne is home to two major optical societies- The American Optometric Association (AOA) and the BritishOpticalSociety (BOS). Lansdowne has been prominently featured on various American television shows including "The West Wing", "Cheer" and "Gossip Girl". In recent years it has become popular with tourists for its unique architecture which includes Victorian-era homes (called "Drury Haunts") dating back to 1815 as well as pioneer era buildings from the 18th century still standing today.
