Lansdowne, Pennsylvania is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is the oldest community in Lackawanna County and the second oldest in Pennsylvania (the first being Westmoreland). It was founded on February 12th, 1784 by Nicholas Lansdowne. The original name of the borough was "Westmoreland". On October 4th, 1824 a group of citizens of Lansdowne petitioned for a new name to be chosen for their town as "Lansdowne" because they thought it would be more accurate than either "Westmoreland" or "Middletown". They were successful and received approval from the Board of Commissioners to change their name on November 3rd. The Borough of Lansdowne has been around since 1784 and was one of three townships that made up what is now Lackawanna County. The other two townships were Easton and Middletown. In 1872 when Lancaster became an independent county, Lansdowne became part of that county as well. The first buildings in Lansdowne were log cabins built by Nicholas Lansdowne himself on his farmstead known today as Northumberland Drive. These cabins served as homes until1850 when stone houses began to be erected throughout the town. By 1870 there were over 60 homes with streetcars running through the town providing transportation between these homes and various businesses located within walking distance including butcher shops, churches/synagogues and schools.
Lansdowne Township was established in 1855, and the first post office was opened in 1857. The township was named for General John Lansdowne, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
