Lansdowne is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,674 at the 2000 census. Lansdowne is located on the southern edge of Pittsburgh and is bordered by Squirrel Hill to the north and west, Oakmont to the east, and Monroeville to the south. It lies on the lower reaches of the Monongahela River. The township was organized in 1784 as part of what became Allegheny County. It was named for John Lansdowne, a British soldier who had come to America in 1688. In 1821, it was made a county seat and has remained so ever since. The first settler in Lansdowne was William Hinton Jr., who erected a cabin on what is now called Old Main Street in 1784. Many other early settlers were also responsible for making Lansdowne one of its most vibrant communities: Daniel Dunn (1787-1864), David Ritchie (1803-1886), James Sweeny (1810-1892), Isaac Kapp (died 1865), Moses Greenbaum (died 1881), Samuel Mayhew (died 1905)…and many more! In 1830, Lanesdowne voted to become an independent borough within Pittsburgh; however, this decision later been overturned on appeal byPittsburgh City Council because it coincided with efforts by then Mayor George Stephenson to annex all of Allegheny County into his city! Lansdowne experienced considerable development during its time as an annexed borough: construction began on what is now known as Maple Leaf Drive in 1830; Borough Hall was built in 1831; Pittsburgh's first public school opened in 1835; and residential streets such as Bloomfield Avenue and Newmark Road were laid out around 1840. Additionally, businesses like J & W Schwartz’s grocery store opened up around this time period – serving both residents and visitors alike! However despite these positive developments however there were also some negative aspects which can be remembered from Lansdownse’s past: In 1848 when taxes were raised upon annexation by Pittsburgh City Council riots occurred between local residents and city officials including Mayor Stephenson which left several people dead; following World War II brief times when poverty plagued Lansdowne due largely To wartime rationing measures instituted by President Franklin D Roosevelt; And finally more recently there has been significant crime activity taking place throughout much of LansDownE over recent years leading some residents to dub it “The Town That Never Sleeps”!

Lansdowne was founded in 1798 by John Lansdowne and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the Lansdowne family, who were landlords in the area at the time. In 1814, Lansdowne became a township in Bucks County. In 1916, it merged with neighboring Bethel Township to form Lansdowne-Bethel Township. On December 2, 1922, the township absorbed Bigelow Township into its boundaries. The population of Lansdowne decreased from 697 in 1950 to 568 as of 2010; however, this has since increased to 710 due to births and deaths within the township over that time period. Although manufacturing is no longer a major contributor to the economy of Lansdowne (although some small businesses still do business there), many residents continue their involvement in agriculture or other rural pursuits. One such activity is running an agricultural museum which opened its doors in 1984. The museum features exhibits on topics such as dairy farming and horticulture. Lansdownsie High School is located within the township and offers education from PreKindergarten through 12th grade along with vocational training programs for students interested in becoming electrical engineers or computer programmers.
Lansdowne is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area.
