Lansdowne was settled in 1781 by George Lansdowne and his wife, Anne. The town was named for the Lansdowne family, which had originated in Somerset, England. In 1824, John Fenton bought land in the town and founded the first retail grocery store there. In 1850, a post office was established at Lansdowne and it remained in operation until 1958. In 1865, John Wanamaker opened his first department store in Lansdowne. The store is still open today and is home to a wide variety of items including clothing, jewelry, kitchen supplies and more. In 1907, the Lansdowne Improvement Company was formed to develop downtown Lansdowne. Today, portions of downtown are home to businesses such as banks and restaurants. In 1911-12, Lansdowne became part of the newly created Pennsylvania Railroad system and began to experience rapid growth. At that time, it was one of the most important towns on the railroad system with an abundance of shops and businesses located along both its main streets. Over time however, some of these businesses have moved out or been replaced by newer ones while others have closed down entirely due to lack of activity or competition from larger counterparts. Today's economy largely depends upon manufacturing as well as servicessector jobs within proximity to large metropolitan areas like Philadelphia (20 miles) or Pittsburgh (25 miles). This has led to expansions into new markets like Ohio (30 miles) or Michigan (35 miles), but also decreases in traditional sales locations like Lansdownse where many operations used to be housed together on two main routes near each other – now they are scattered throughout different parts of town with only a few remaining major destinations left in close vicinity like Main Street between Third & Fourth Streets – this used to be known as "The Village". 1

It became an incorporated township on December 12, 1830. On January 1st, 1907, the population of Lans Downey reached 2,571 people! The primary industry that continues to drive economic development in today's LansDowney is agriculture – with crops such as corn, wheat and soybeans accounting for most of the production hereabouts. However some light industrial activity also takes place here including a few concerns manufacturing glass products and tires; however this has been rapidly declining over recent years due to competition from more high-tech operations nearby. Some jobs that have disappeared include those within service businesses such as restaurants or gas stations; however new businesses have begun emerging recently (such as a health clinic) that hope to fill these niches vacated by older businesses gone out of business or closed down for other reasons (i.e., due to technology advances). In addition to its agricultural heritage, another key factor contributing to today's unique identity for this small town are its miles long street grid system which still provides essential access into every home throughout its boundaries even well into present day suburban areas To date no major city-wide streets have been built within our limits!
