Lansdowne was founded in 1795 by Capt. James Lansdown and his family as a Quaker settlement on the southern edge of Armstrong County. The land for the community came from Sir George Monmouth's estate near present-day Allentown. In 1815, Captain John Denton purchased 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land east of Lansdowne from Colonel James Wadsworth for $4 per acre ($10 per hectare). This area became known as "The Township". In 1829–30, Captain John Denton donated an acre (0.50 km²) to the school district which named it "Denton Academy". In 1851 Edward Wistar leased 2 acres (0.80 km²) from Captain John Denton for $5 per year and built a log cabin thereon which served as the town hall until its replacement in 1912. By 1860, Lansdowne had a population of 100 people and 10 stores; by 1870 it had grown to 214 people and 15 stores; by 1880 it had reached 472 people and 30 stores; by 1890 it had reached 685 people and 40 stores; by 1900 it totaled 1,711 people with only 26 businesses. Three years after opening its doors to students on October 11th 1901 – one hundred years ago this day – Lansdowns' Academy closed due to lack of funds and inadequate enrollment levels that continue up to this day despite efforts made over many years including building two new schools on campus - one for girls in 2001 and one for boys in 2006 - making Lansdowns one of just six Pennsylvania towns without an academy today On December 3rd 1916 local man Harry Flanders donated two acres (0.80 km²) south of current-day Walmart onto which he built a home now used as office space for the town government while also erecting a small church may have been another contributing factor to why Lansdowns saw such success during its first few decades: With only 26 businesses at that time there was plenty of opportunity both locally and nationally for entrepreneurs like Harry Flanders to start new businesses with some initial capital provided through his donation while still living within their own community Since then development has continued unabated with more than 50 large/mall sized businesses open within 5 miles or less since Harry's gift in 2016 - further evidence that if you're looking for success in today's economy look no further than Armstrong County's Lansdowne!
