Lansdowne is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of thePittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Lansdowne was George Washington who landed there on September 16, 1799. In 1814, Lansdowne's first post office opened and served as the seat of government for what is now York County until 1861 when it moved to Gettysburg. Lansdowne was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1912, from parts of neighboring Allegheny Township. On November 3 of that year the Borough Council voted 6-3 to incorporate as a city with its own mayor and City Council members. On December 2nd 1922 Mayor John J. Welsh announced plans to merge all three municipalities into one larger entity called "Lansdowne" under his leadership - this plan failed by a vote of 5-4 however town governments throughout York County did manage to form "communities" within their respective boundaries which continue even today - this led to the name change from Borough to City and back again before finally settling on Lansdowne in honor of General Lafayette who fought for American independence and helped contribute significantly to the development of Pittsburgh during its early years (18th century). In 1939 Lansdowne became home base for America's largest anti-aircraft battery when construction began on Fort Monmouth School across Duquesne River from town limits; work continued until 1942 after which Point Breeze came into use as gunnery range headquarters & training school while Battery H replaced Partick Arsenal & Lewistown Armory near town limits also served as armories until 1957 when both sites closed down due to conversion into housing developments etc... Lansdowne has been in existence since 1785 when it was founded by Hugh Banister and others as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The original name of the town was Haworth. It became Lansdowne after Sir John Lansdowne bought the land from Nicholas Township in 1785 for $2,000. The first settler in what is now Lansdowne was Hugh Banister who arrived in 1785 with his family from Ireland. He built a cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River and named his settlement Haworth after himself. William Hazen purchased land adjoining Banister's holdings in 1814 for $1,500 and renamed his property Hazenstown to honor him and his family. In 1827, John Darnall donated additional land to form present-day Lansdowne Township which he had also acquired near Hazenstown. Lans Downe Post Office opened on July 1, 1821 and remained open until October 3, 1922 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1907. In 1924, part of present-day Lansdale borough became part of Lansdowne township while other parts were annexed into neighboring Wilkinsburg Borough during that year's annexation process; both towns continued to be known as "Lansdale" throughout their respective annexations. On January 1, 1927, all but one block of present-day Lansdale Borough were merged into modern day Lansdale Township without any interruption to its name or postal service; this change took place despite objections from many residents who felt that their community should have retained its own unique name (despite being within a larger municipality). On October 3, 1922*, shortly before closing at 2 p.m., the last post office in town closed with an amount of mail totaling 666 dollars which represented about 25% of all outgoing mail then delivered through Pennsylvania state borders*.
