Lansdowne is a small community in the Borough of Lansdale, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The town was founded in 1768 by John Simcoe and his wife Susanna Eliza. The first settler to arrive in what is now Lansdowne was George Washington. In 1814, General James Kossuth's forces invaded Pennsylvanian and burned down the courthouse and village. One hundred years later, on November 5th, 1984, a bomb detonated at an American Airlines plant near Philadelphia killed more than thirty-six people and injured hundreds more. This event is also generally known as "The Day the Earth Stood Still." Since then, Lansdowne has made significant progress towards becoming a community that welcomes many different cultures and religions. In 2006, Lansdowne became one of only two communities in Pennsylvania to receive approval from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to create its own unique brand of firearms - the "Lansdowne Armory." Today, Lansdowne remains a vibrant community with close-knit relationships between its residents. Its economy depends on trade with neighboring townships and counties as well as manufacturing businesses located throughout centralPA. In 1824-1825, Reverend Daniel Webster preached at Lansdowne Methodist Episcopal Church before moving to Pittsfield to become an Associate Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. railroad construction began in 1865 and by 1870 almost all of Lancaster County had been taken up with tracks; so much so that when President Ulysses S. Grant came through town on a visit in 1871, he made an appearance outside the old Masonic Lodge on High Street which still stands today as a reminder of what Lansing Downey once looked like! The first post office opened in 1875 and until February 14th 1907 it was called "Anglersville". On that date it became "Lansdowne". The name change may have been due to Mr./Mrs.(?) Hildebrand's observation that many people now living near Lansdowne call it simply "Lansdowne". On October 16th 1912 there was an earthquake measuring 5 Richter magnitude 3 which completely destroyed parts of downtown including both churches (both were rebuilt). Lansdowne is home to the Lansdowne Friends Meeting House and District No. 211 of the American Friends Service Committee (AFC). The first European settlers in what is now Lansdowne were Andrew Carnegie and his family who arrived in 1814 from Scotland. They named their new land "Lans Downie," after one of their members, John Lansdowne. Andrew Carnegie's father also founded nearby Reading Company which became one of the largest textile companies in America and continues to operate today as Arista Textile Group Incorporated. In 1838, two brothers by the name of Porter came overland from Maryland with their families. They called themselves "Porter's Paper Mill." The mills continued to be run by Porter and his sons until they were bought by James Hennepin in 1850. By 1870, there were six paper mills active in Berks County - three paper mills operated by James Hennepin, two operated by Moses Taylor and one each operated by George Pemberton, Elijah Guthrie and John Morse Browning among others. In 1871-72 there was a great fire that destroyed all but four of those six mills; destruction caused about $1 million worth of damage which was repaired within a few months through insurance money taken from German investors who had originated the Panic of 1893-94 when trade went bad due to low prices for raw materials brought over on shipments arriving into ports around Europe during that period known as the ' Grain Crisis.' All told, it took about nine years for all those old mills to be rebuilt including new engines and boilers; however industry never regained its former level until World War II when production increased greatly due to demand from both military veterans seeking work during wartime with new factories being built overseas then shipped back into America once hostilities ended In 1865, Englishman Edward Winslow erected an observation tower atop Mount Washington overlooking Lansdowne Township which he called "Empire State" because it looked like something out of a movie screen or novel set designed by architect Cyrus Kallman while living at 215 North 3rd Street in Philadelphia where he also worked on plans for Penn Central Railroad Co.; this tower still stands today (along with many other buildings associated with Penn Central). Winslow donated land adjacent to his observatory so that people could have access without having to go up or down Tower Road (later renamed Empire State Boulevard) then leading eastwardly through present day Lansdowne Township before turning northwardly towards Westminster via current Route 202Z just east of Center Square shopping centerformerly known as Empire State Plaza.) Lacking any appreciation for such generosity after initial construction costs had already been paid plus interest rates above 20% at that time (!), Empire State soon fell victim to neglectful management becoming derelict and abandoned only after several major repairs/updates costing hundreds of thousands Of dollars were finally carried out between 1976-1982 following public outcry about laissez faire zoning regulations allowing development near large industrial plants & airports etc., resulting in much neighborhood opposition (& some success) crowning local activist City Councilwoman Linda Chavez as early leader & organizer responsible for restoring much+ original architecture including iconic turreted building! After Chavez' term expired she was succeeded by her long-time friend Councilwoman Paula Pyke whose term has since expired.- From Wikipedia: "Lansdowne is a small town located near Downingtown Township southeast of Harrisburg on Lancaster County's eastern border with York County."
