Lansdowne is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It falls within the Bethlehem-Easton-Middletown Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lansdowne were farmers named Pollock and Morell who arrived around 1793. They started out clearing land for farming and soon became successful as merchants. By 1830, they had built a gristmill on the river which continued to be a major economic force in the community until it closed in 1892. In 1835, John D'Arcy founded the village of Lansdowne on an island in the river near his mill. The name derived from "Lancaster", England where he had been born and eventually died. He had originally purchased the island from Sir William Vanbrugh for £10 (). In 1870, John Aiken bought half of Lansdowne from Pollock family members and began developing it into a town with its own School Board, Post Office, and police department. In 1872 he donated land to build a Masonic temple and cemetery that still stands today. The first homes were built between 1874 and 1880; many of them remain standing today including several homes that are considered rare examples of Victorian architecture dating back to this time period such as those at 158th Street & Browning Avenue or at 175th Street & Park Avenue. This period also saw dramatic growth with over 1,000 residents coming to Lansdowne via railroad during what is now known as "the rush" period between 1887-1890 when Pittsburgh's burgeoning industrial development led to large numbers of people moving into what was then rural Lehigh County seeking new opportunities (and sometimes causing some conflict). Many of these newcomers formed social clubs that helped develop their new surroundings while also hosting dances and other events popular among their contemporaries like football games or picnics which often attracted professional players from nearby cities like Pittsburg or Philadelphia en route back home for short periods of time during summer months after their season ended...one example is James Hogg who played football for local high school team Northampton Highlanders before being drafted by Pittsburg Steelers in 1889 but spending most his career playing for Duquesne Bullets (now part of University Park Steelers) In 1899 he married Jennie Meeks who attended Altoona High School before becoming active in local politics There have been few changes to this core fabric since then - just incremental additions/widening gaps due mostlyto population growth (+4000+)
