Lansdowne was founded in 1798 by Nicholas Lansdowne and his brother-in-law James McGillivray. Lansdowne is located on the Susquehanna River between Parkersburg and Kingston and along PA Route 309 north of Butler. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which, is land and (1%) is water. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 1,711 people, 527 households, and 383 families residing in the town. The population density was 20 people per square mile (8/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%. There were 527 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 21%of all households were made up of individuals and 8% had someone who live alone who was 65 years old or older. The history of gun slings goes back to the beginning of firearms. Gunners would strap a basket or bag to theirback and use it as a sling to shoot projectiles over their shoulder. This method was very inefficient and required a lot of strength to hold onto the firearm with one hand while using the other to sling the projectile. Eventually, someone came up with a way to make this more efficient by using two pieces of metal, one on each end, as an armature and then attaching the firearm to this framework. This system became known as a "gun sling."
Lansdowne is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA–NJ–DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lansdowne was first settled by English colonists in 1681. The name Lansdowne comes from the nearby Malvern Hills and Lansdowne Township in Buckinghamshire, England. The first settler in what would become Lansdowne was Nicholas Hathaway who arrived on July 6th 1681 with his family and some cows and four hogs. He purchased three acres of land east of present-day Lansdowne from Captain John Smith for £50 (later worth $1,000). In 1724 Samuel Addis built a house on the site which still stands today as the town's downtown core. Addis served as postmaster for many years and also ran a store that stocked goods such as flour, sugar and meat until it closed around 1819. In 1792 James Kapp erected a log cabin on the bank of Beaver Creek just upstream from where it converges with Malvern River about two miles north of present day Lansdownsge Township line. This cabin became known as "Kapp's Cabin" after him and later became occupied by Quakers before being bought by subscription in 1807 by George Washington when he moved to America from Great Britain to serve as its first president being age 26 years old at the time. On October 15th 1800 steps were taken to establish township government over what would become Lansdowne Township based on an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act forforming Partes intojs Townships within this Province." The township was named after General Edward Rutledge who had been instrumental in helping create Maryland during its Revolutionary War campaign against British forces under Cornwallis (the general surrendered at Yorktown). Rutledge relocated his family to Pennsylvanian soil after arriving there December 12th 1800 following a trip through New England along with General Thomas Pemberton which led to his famous remark "Pennsylvania can do better than she has done". After becoming majority white within six months of its establishment membership within township government reverted back to stores only due to lack thereof according to history books beginning up until recent decades however there are references dating back to early 1800s that mention blacksmith shops operated side-by-side with other businesses near intersection of Second Street & Third Avenue west of present day Route 22 between Berlin & Lancaster CountiesPA
