The area that now comprises Lansdowne was originally called Hempstead Township, After the death of Founding Father George Washington in 1799, his widow Martha took up residence there with her two young daughters and began to raise experimental crops growing wildflowers on their estate near present-day Hershey Park. The township became known as Lansdowne Township when James Langhorne purchased the estate and donated it to the government for development in 1804. In 1876, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie bought much of what is now Lansdowne from James Langhorne for $1 million dollars; he immediately renamed it Carnegie Steel Town because steel production would soon become an important industry hereabouts. In 1907, Bethlehem Steel Company moved its operations out of Pittsburgh and into what is now Lansdowne when it merged with other companies formingsteelworks number 9 (now Commonwealth Edison) along Third Street between Market Street and Erie Avenue which then became home to Bethlehem's engineering departments; these buildings still stand today (though they have been replaced by One Pennsylvania Place). In 1915 Paramount Pictures filmed "Poodles" on farmland north of Lansdowne; this turned out to be one of the most famous films ever made in America. Today remnants of Paramount's movie set can be seen scattered around town where a large parking lot once stood adjacent to Pennypeth High School before being taken over by a local drive-in theater chain some time later. Lansdowne is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Lansdowne was founded in 1786 by Colonel John Lansdowne and his family. The original name, "Lansdowne," means "a shallow stream" in Welsh. The first white settlers came to Lansdowne in 1786, when Colonel John Lansdowne and his family arrived from Wales. He built a small cabin on the present-day corner of Fifth and Market Streets. In 1801, Colonel John's son George erected a sawmill on the current site of the Town Hall building. In 1819, Captain James Ritchie bought land near what is now Third Street and Market Streets for a gristmill known as Rice Mill No 2 (now called First Baptist Church). Captain Ritchie also developed what is now Lansdowne into an agricultural community with several stores and homes around the mill property. By 1830, there were ten households in Lansdownse with one or more farmssteads; seventy-six people lived there full time during that decade. In 1835, General David Dixon ordered all white males over twenty-one years old to leave Lancaster County because he felt that its social order had become too disorderly for such young men. Most of these men went to nearby Cumberland Township where they formed their own communities until after World War II when they returned to Lancaster County proper as per General Dixon's orders. Lansdowne experienced rapid growth followingCaptain James Ritchie's purchase of land adjacent to First Baptist Church in 1819 which became home to many early residents including Captains Robert Knecht (1823-1892) and Isaac Cook (1798-1860). From this point forward most residents engaged in agriculture or manufacturing businesses which continued until around 1930 when oil production began spurring increased settlement within rural areas throughout Pennsylvania particularly those along major highways like I-70/I-81 which led directly to heavy industry towns like Bethlehem Steel Corp., Duquesne Gas Works & Refineries etcetera outside of Philadelphia thus cutting off Lansdownse from its core commercial district making it difficult for future generations to visit or enjoy its unique architecture and history
The Lansdowne family migrated to Pennsylvania in the early 1700s. The Lansdownse name originated in Ulster, Ireland and was derived from a location called "Lansdowne House." In 1753, John Lansdowne, Sr. purchased the land that now includes Lansdowne Township from the Potters. The family continued to live there until 1837, when they moved to what is now Lansdale Township. John Jr. and his brothers-in-law, James Dunlap and Nicholas Herrington bought land in 1839 and developed it into what is today Lansdale Park.
