Lansdowne is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is home to the Lansdowne Elementary School and Lighthouse Park. It is also home to Lansdowne Post Office and the Lansdowne Baptist Church. Lansdowne was first settled in 1775 by Captain John Trimble and his wife Sarah, who named their new settlement for British Minister of Foreign Affairs Sir Robert Peel. In 1815, Captain John Trimble's son Colonel James Trimble donated land to build a post office in what is now Lansdowne. At the time, there were only two other posts in Butler County: York and Girardville. The post office operated from 1815 until 1840 when it was closed due to low mail volume. In 1847, Reverend Fenton Mudd bought 5 acres of land north of present-day Lansdownsie for $60 dollars which he used as a churchyard and schoolhouse complex known as Mudd's Landing (now part of Antrim). Mudd's Landing served as both a stop on the Erie Canal and an early day school for children living near Lancaster or Philadelphia along with religious instruction from ministers hired by Mudd himself. In 1850, Reverend Isaac Asbury purchased 4 more acres of land east of present-day Lansdownsie for $100 dollars which he used as a meeting place for anti-slavery protestors during the American Civil War era called "The March on Washington". Today's Lester Street runs through much of what once comprised Mudd's Landing including Asbury Chapel (opened in 1865), Mr Delaware House (1901), Mrs Delaware House (1902), The Methodist Episcopal Church (1892), First Presbyterian Episcopal Church (1893), and finally The Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia Inc., brought over by Bishop Charles Jaffe in 1978 that serves all Catholics withinPhiladelphia limits since 1923... In 1865, local builder Daniel Webster erected what today is known as Webster Hall on lands donated by Colonel James Trimble following his death during the American Civil War while serving with General George Armstrong Custer’s command at Vicksburg Mississippi.. After Webster Hall was destroyed by fire in 1902*, plans were made to rebuild but this never happened because World War II intervened*.Webster Hall reverted back to its original form following another fire* which destroyed most of it again between 1945-1950*. Lansdowne is a town in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is located on the Monongahela River. The first settler in Lansdowne was James Denny in 1798. By 1828, there were five families living in Lansdowne. The first store opened in 1829 and was run by John Crain and his son-in-law, Amos Goodrich. In 1830, Joseph Bates built a log cabin near present day milepost 9 on the Monongahela River. From this cabin, Bates started to sell goods from his farm at present day intersection of Market Street and Second Avenue. In 1832, he sold his land to JF Rankin who began to build a house on it which became known as "Rankin's Plantation". In 1848, John Fetterman came to Lansdowne with his family from Huntingdon Township and founded the Fetterman Brewery which provided beer for local merchants. The brewery closed after World War II but has been restored several times including most recently in 2006 as part of the Great Allegheny Passage Railroad Heritage Trail project (now known as Gateway steam Train Museum). In 1865, during Andrew Johnson's presidency, Congress passed an act authorizing a survey of lands within Northumberland County for township formation; this act resulted in the founding of Lansdowne Township on December 12th of that year by Congressman George Washington Clark (the namesake for General George Washington's hometown). On January 3rd 1870 Samuel Witherspoon purchased 2 miles north from Rankin's Plantation site making him one of the earliest settlers outside of Pittsburgh proper - he would later become one of its largest landowners In 1889 Mrs Mary Ann Kapp bought 10 acres south from Rankin along Third Avenue South for $500 dollars; she turned it into what is now called "Kapp Park". There are several hermitages associated with Mrs Kapp including "Kapp House" (built 1913), "Kapp Farm" (1887), "Kapp Chapel" (1889), "Hillcrest Manor" (1912), and finally "Doris Wright House" (2002). During World War II many homes were used as stores or barracks by American troops stationed nearby such as Fort Pitt barracks #2 which stood just east of current day Third Avenue South between Mellon Drive and Forbes Boulevard . After the war ended many buildings downtown were used for housing until they all burned down around 1970 when city ordinances changed policy about demolition . Today little remains except foundations although some evidence suggests that early settlers built outbuildings such as a blacksmith shop next door to Rankin's Plantation which still stands today . From 1800 until 1920 there were only three stores open within 100 miles radius of Pittsburgh: two located in Harrisburg and one here at Lansdowne while Beaver Valley had ten stores total before 1850 including four owned by Mr Ziegler himself spread over an area measuring more than 500 acres . Even though Beaver Valley developed independently its shops shared much commonality with those nearest Pittsburgh such as being open seven days per week with same hours , having an unconditional lager policy , carrying nearly every type imaginable product then available plus added variety via mail order .. however Beaver Valley did not reach its potential commercially until well into prohibition era when dry goods retailer Montgomery Ward moved their headquarters westward to Knoxville .. even years after prohibition itself ceased production these companies continued operations through various acquisitions becoming Penn National Banks ancestor today
