A post office was established at Lansdowne in 1800, but it failed to take off because there were no residents living there. In 1814, local farmer James Armstrong founded Armstrong's Lumber Company with his brother-in-law William Stephenson. The company developed into one of the largest lumber companies east of the Allegheny Mountains before merging with fellow lumber giant Hogg & Co., Ltd., also headquartered in nearby Allentown, PA during World War II for an unprecedented $2 billion reorganization that made Hogg one of the most powerful corporations in America. After World War II ended, Armstrong's company merged with Wurlitzer Manufacturing Company to form ABC Corporation (later known as Avon Products Inc.) which still exists today as a global family-owned business conglomerate with headquarters located near Philadelphia’s Independence Hall Square where George Washington once resided! At that time there was no village or settlement on the site. The next year, Captains George Washington and James Wilson landed their forces here while marching northward from Philadelphia and they named the place "Lansdowne" after General Sir Lewis Lansdowne who had helped them victory over the French in 1759 during the French and Indian War. In 1814, when Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to purchase land east of the Monongahela River for military use, Lansdowne residents voted to become a township under direct government control instead of going through Philadelphia again. This event marked step forward for Lansdowne as it became one of only a few places in Pennsylvania where township status could be achieved without going throughPhiladelphia again. Over time Lansdowne has developed into a small community with close-knit relationships between its citizens.
