Lansdowne is a small town in Pennsylvania. It is located in the Susquehanna Valley, about 25 miles east of Harrisburg. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Lansdowne was first settled by English colonists in 1755. Lansdowne has been incorporated as a borough since 1836. The village of Lansdowne merged with the borough of Northumberland in 1959, and then with the township of Whitehall in 1978. The name Lansdowne comes from the name of one of the early settlers, John Lansdowne Sr., who arrived from England in 1755. John's brother-in-law and namesake, William Lansdowne, also founded a small community near present day Lansdale; however this settlement failed to take hold because it lacked common resources such as water or transportation connections. In 1767, two Dutch families moved to what is now Lansdale from Bethlehem Township and started a farm called "Hendrickson's Mills". However this farm failed as well due to low levels of soil fertility and competition from other farmers. In 1800, another group of English settlers named Derbyshire came overlanders and founded an agricultural colony on land that would later become known as Larsdun [Lansdale] County PA (later Delaware County). This colony grew rapidly due to good access to markets for their crops; however after several years they abandoned their project and returned home because they found no suitable locations within range for farming operations outside Lancaster County proper. Early residents of Lansdun County were primarily Loyalists who had fled British rule during the American Revolution. Many local landmarks including churches - including one dedicated to Saint George - still stand today inside present day Lansdun Borough limits despite being long gone when originally built brick and stone structures were erected around them Congregationalist Reverend Jeremiah Nevin purchased these properties for $1 per acre back in 1824 which included part of what is nowpresent day Whitehall Township . At that time there were only five farms within those boundaries making it possible for him to purchase these lands while still living close enoughto his ancestral home at 4 High Street (now Third Avenue) which he resided on until his death on October 7th 1851 age 85 years old! Lansdowne is located south of Reading and east of Bucks County on the Susquehanna River. It was named for John Lansdowne, an early settler. The first people to live in what is now Lansdowne were Native Americans who hunted game in the area. In 1781, Colonel George Washington granted land to Daniel Boone for his " Donation Land" campaign. In 1824, the U.S. Government bought out Colonel Washington's interest and renamed the land "Lansdowne". In 1827, Captain James Cook's expedition discovered the Susquehanna River and its valley while exploring western Pennsylvania looking for a route to New York City through Philadelphia and Baltimore.
