It was in 1892 that Benjamin Banneker, a Quaker immigrant, founded the first ammunition company in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The company produced rifle rounds and pistols for the local market. Ammunition sales grew rapidly and Banneker developed a strong reputation for quality products. In 1899, he opened a factory on the Susquehanna River to produce more reliable bullets for handguns and rifles. Ammunition production continued to grow until World War I when it was discontinued due to the outbreak of war. After the war, ammunition production resumed but at a lower level until the early 1920s when it began to increase again due to increased demand from postwar America.During World War II, ammunition production tripled as Americans stockpiled supplies in anticipation of wartime needs. By 1945, Lansdowne had become one of the largest producers of ammunition in America with facilities located throughout the country. Ammunition manufacturing resumed during post-war years but has been slowly declining since then because of technological changes and competition from other manufacturers. In 1865, Mrs Anna Leech opened her own grocery store at 414 Elm Street which became known as "The Anna Leech Store". On July 10th of that year a fire destroyed most of this building including Mrs AnnaLeech'sio husband Daniel Leches (the original owner). This marked the beginning of an era where many businesses flourished within Lansdownsie due to its open-air shopping environment with no barriers between customers and merchants; this condition continued until 1974 when zoning regulations changed which limited businesses sizes andClosure of stores led to decline over time In 1902, one family took over running an entire block on Elm Street - they called it "The Gables". By 1924 all but one store had closed down either because of competition or because zoning laws had changed making it difficult for them to keep up with rapidly growing Johnstown . In 1934 only one business remained open: Mrs Hoyer's Druggist & Supermarket located at 524 Market Street which continues operation today as Wilson’s Pharmacy In 1947 local resident Miss Marie Currie donated 4 acres (16 ha) adjoining her home lot on US 15 near present day Mellon Drive for use as a public school district playground/cafeteria complex known today simply as Currie Park . When newly annexed intoJohnstown Borough on April 12th 1950 residents voted overwhelmingly not to allow any commercial development within their boundaries despite protestations from some businesses Ownership began slowly evolving from that point forward with help from civic groups such as The Historical Society Of Johnstown In 1957 Joe Pugsley became Superintendent of Schools after being appointed by then Mayor Dr James McNamara who felt much needed leadership change following scandals engulfing Johnsons new government Pugsley instituted cooperation departments such as Physical Education & Home Economics so that every student could have access benefit regardless socioeconomically status He also initiated community service projects such as painting blocks around Town Square during summer vacation 1959/1960 program which raised awareness about education opportunities available outside township limits To date there are still many remains throughout Township affecting both physical infrastructure repair/addition while also impacting culture through tourism Opportunities continue abound today with more progress being made than ever before thanks largely in large part to current Superintendent Joe Puglise
