In 1827, the Susquehanna Railroad reached Lansdowne from Philadelphia and development began immediately with homes being built along the railroad tracks. By 1830, there were over 50 businesses around town including tanneries and mills as well as two churches (one Baptist/ Methodist and one Lutheran). The Panic of 1837 caused a sharp decrease in business activity but this did not stop people from coming to Lansdowne; instead they developed new businesses such as flour mills and livery stables which again thrived during the depression years of 1840-1845. With deliveries taking place twice daily from Philadelphia to Lansdownsie via horse drawn carts carrying sacks of flour alloys down Market Street it is said that “the milling Donegal boys” could be found running errands for their rich kinfolk right up until their departures for college or work late into night These days you can visit some old buildings still standing today like those along Market Street while staying within walking distance of most shops or restaurants if you are looking for an authentic rural experience without having to leave town altogether
