The name Lansdale comes from the nearby mountain range called the Allegheny Mountains. The first European settlers in what is now Lansdale were Dutch migrants who arrived in 1681. They named their town after John Lansdowne, 2nd Viscount of Southampton (1586-1641), a member of the Scottish Parliament and one of the founders of Plymouth Plantation. In 1757, George Washington purchased land east of present-day Lansdale from Robert Morris for £2,500. At that time it was one of only a few settlements west of Philadelphia that had not been founded by Englishmen or Dutchmen as part of an effort to gain control over the valuable lands around Philadelphia and its harbor. Washington's purchase set off a years-long process by which other settlers added to and developed parts of what is now Lansdaleincluding: Westphalia Township (1793), Cherry Hill (1801), Cross Keys (1822), Sewickley Heights (1838), Fox Chase (1859), Griggsville (1921) and Beechwood Park(1950). In 1869, local entrepreneur Isaac Noyes built what would become known as Noyes' Mills on a small lot near present-day Griggsville for spinning cotton yarn into cloth products. This mill remained an important force in local economic life until it closed its doors in 1966 due to fading demand for raw cotton clothingroducing less than 50 pounds per acre during those years.
