Other early settlers included Jonas Guggenheim and John FitzGerald. development began around 1800 when Nicholas' son Philip purchased land east of Center City for development into what is now Lansdale Township . In 1825, the Borough of Lansdale merged with the Village of Easton to form the City of Lansdale . The merger resulted in an increase in tax rates which led to businesses moving out of town and creating an exodus of talent that has kept the township thriving ever since: many famous residents include Morris Day (founder of American Motors), Irwin Schiffman (builder of Schiffman Steel), Maurice Schwartz (owner/operator KFC), Jay Pritzker (founder/CEO Wrigley's Inc.), Bob Hope (comedian), Sandy Koufax (pitcher), Milton Susskind (investment banker) and numerous others. As a result of its strong economy, city status granted to Lansdale brought new infrastructure such as more extensive streetscaping, public transportation and even an indoor arena for professional basketball! Today, many locals still refer to themselves simply as "Lansdalians" because that is how they were originally introduced to the community – through their families or friends!
