Lansdale is a small town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,635 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Lansdale was founded in 1785 by Capt. John Lansdale and his family. In 1814, Daniel Denny founded the Delaware and Schuylkill Canal here. Lansdale is named after General John Forbes Lansdale who led American forces during the Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1783. In 1847, Captain Frederick Hays purchased the town from Colonel James Wilson for $1,000 cash. The first store in Lansdale opened on Main Street in 1848 and was called "Hays's grocery." By 1860 there were nine stores in the town with a total population of 2,222 people. By 1870 there were twenty-six stores with a population of 8,924 people; by 1880 there were thirty-one stores with a population of 24,880 people; and by 1890 there were forty-three stores with a population of 38,640 people. During this time period Lansdale also became known as "the breadbasket of McKean County." This was because it produced high quality goods that sold throughout Pennsylvania and beyond. Many industries have been located or based here including steel production (beginning around 1900), textiles (beginning around 1920), pharmaceuticals (beginning around 1940), computer programming (starting in 1970), and many more since then! In 2007/2008 Lansdale had its largest annexed community ever when it annexed the neighboring community of Whitehall to make up its combinedpopulation for that year at 1,817 residents!
