In 1800, Forbes moved his headquarters from Philadelphia to what is now UPMC University Park in the town center; thus Lancaster acquired its current name of "Dave." Lancaster experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a borough on November 1, 1893; at that time it had a population of 753 people. As one result of annexations by other municipalities over the next several years – including Bluefield Township on May 15, 1896 and Allentown Township on July 11, 1897 – Lancaster reached its present size and shape. Today much of what once made up Borough Hall Square are still identifiable remnants from that period: For example, part of the original brick wall around central square still stands today! During World War II many residents left their homes for military service; those who remained built up an extensive munitions manufacturing industry which continues today under various names including Conestoga Arsenal Ammunition Company Inc., Butler Ammunition Company Inc., Patriot Ordnance Corporation and Magpul Industries Inc.. Afterward many residents returned to their homes; however manufacturing continued until 1974 when all but three factories were closed down due to declines in demand for munitions worldwide coupled with technological advances which led to decreased need for guns
