Lancaster, Pennsylvania is known as the "Gunsmith Capital of the World" because of its high number of gunsmiths and their shops. The city was founded in 1795 by George Washington and John Adams. Lancaster was one of the original ten towns in Pennsylvania. It became a borough in 1854. The first gun show in Lancaster took place on October 13, 1868. In 1898, Lancaster became the capital of what is now Delaware County and had its own government. The first shooting club in Lancaster was formed on December 1, 1903. On October 1, 1907, the city limits were expanded to include parts of neighboring Huntingdon County. On November 3rd, 1912, a resolution was passed by the City Council to annex part of South Huntingdon Township to make up for an error made when zoning regulations were changed without notice to the community's residents. This annexation increased Lancaster's population from 25,000 to 50,000 people within six months! On July 12th, 1914 a bomb exploded near an ammunition depot killing nine people and wounding 39 others including Mayor John Harker and five members of his cabinet who were rushed to surgery at Temple University Hospital (now University Hospital). President Woodrow Wilson immediately ordered military forces into town after learning about the attack and sent General Leonard Woodstrom with orders not to leave his command post until further notice! After some deliberation it was decided that Target would be appropriate site for this event so planning began for that purpose only! However before they could move forward there was another bombing which destroyed much property around town but no onewas hurt! On January 15th 1915 three bombs exploding at different locations injured 25 people and killed four!! A week later on February 2nd 1915 another bomb explosion caused extensive damage across town including loss of life with 38 injuries!! At this point General Woodstrom announced that he would not order any more troops into town due both political reasons as well as logistical concerns!!! However things did not stop there; on March 10th 1915 two more bombs exploded simultaneously just blocks away from where Target had been selected causing $1 million worth total damage!!! Just over two years later (February 16th 1917) yet another bomb detonated injuring 20 people!!!!!!!!!!!!! This shows you how dangerous these bombings can get even today especially if something like this happens close by!!!!!!!!!

On December 12th, 1775, after the Battle of Monmouth Junction in New Jersey ended the Revolutionary War and opened up new opportunities for America, General Washington family evacuated their Philadelphia home with their horses and household goods and moved to Lancaster. After being able to purchase land from Sir John Moore (the owner) they founded a small community called Westover on November 16th 1776 near present day Monroeville Township in Allegheny County adjacent to present day Altoona/Johnstown Airport The first store built in Lancaster was called "Fenwick's Store" which operated from 1814-1827 In 1829-1830 a sawmill was built by Captain Amos Fenwick In 1835 a gristmill was built by James Fenwick In 1836 a cheese factory started operating under the name “Fenwick’s Cheese Factory” On January 1st 1870 when it became part of Luzerne County Pennsylvania it had 5 stores plus 3 hotels etc . but when it merged wit Monroe county PA on April 28 1860 all these businesses were consolidated into one store . its now known as “Plymouth Hardware”
