Lancaster is a town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 24,722 at the 2010 census. Lancaster is the second most populous municipality in York County after York City. It lies on the Susquehanna River and forms part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Lancaster were Quakers who arrived from Philadelphia in 1753. They built their first meeting house on Canisteo Creek in 1758 and continued to meet there until 1814 when they moved to a new meeting house on Market Street which still stands today. In 1772, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Bank which became one of the largest banks west of the Allegheny Mountains. The town was incorporated as a borough by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on November 14, 1825 and named for George Washington who had been president during that year's war with Mexico. In 1870, many small mills closed due to competition from larger companies and so Lancaster lost its manufacturing base but regained it somewhat in recent years through heavy investment by businesses such as Google, Uber and Twitter; latterly also reversing its decision not to build any more factories after reports emerged of environmental damage caused by them. Today much of Lancaster’s commercial activity takes place around 3rd & 4th Streets downtown where there are several large office buildings (Oscar Mayer World Headquarters being particularly notable) as well as several smaller ones scattered throughout the neighborhoods surrounding it including rural areas east of Interstate 376 (~10 miles northwest), along Catawba River (~5 miles southwest), along Penn State Route 181 (~10 miles southeast) as well as outlying farms/ranches about 20 minutes away via routes such as 570N or 820W highways

Lancaster was founded by George Lancaster in 1795. The town became a center for agriculture and coal mining, and its economy grew increasingly dependent on the trade with the United States. In 1869, Lancaster was incorporated as a borough, and in 1899 it became an independent city. The city's population has grown steadily since then, reaching its current level of over 150,000 people in 2007.
