Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a town located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. Lancaster's history goes back to 1795 when it was part of York County. The town reached its peak growth during the mid-19th century and by 1860 had attained a population of over 50,000 people. However, Lancaster's fortunes changed during World War I as many factories closed and the war led to a decrease in manufacturing jobs which caused Lancaster's population to fall back below 20,000 by 1920. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Lancaster experienced a period of rapid growth thanks to its location on the Susquehanna River and its status as an agricultural center. However, these successes came at a cost: portions of Lancaster were destroyed in fires that ravaged the area in the 1930s and 1940s; large parts of downtown were destroyed by bombs from World War II; and most recently, several neighborhoods have seen significant gentrification spurred by new development along Route 66. Lancaster was first settled by Europeans in 1795 after being bought from Native Americans for £30 sterling (about $60 U.S.) by John Watson (1684-1757). At first there were just 7 families living here including those who owned land around what is now downtown; within 10 years however almost everyone who lived here had moved away because life was too hard on Indian land without any farming or trade opportunities available nearby. One reason why this community grew so quickly was that it lay adjacent to two major rivers – one flowing northwards through York County while another flowed eastward through Clinton County before joining up again near where present day downtown sits – making transportation easy and providing access to both markets for goods brought downriver or shipped upcountry across open water crossings such as Susquehanna & Monongahela rivers (see map 1).
