Kingston, Pennsylvania is a small city in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of theReading Township and Yorktown Heights School District. The history of Kingston goes back to 1795 when John Ritchie founded the village of Kingston on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. The first courthouse in what is now Kingston was built in 1802. In 1814, the village became a borough and was renamed after King George III of Great Britain. On July 1, 1907, it reverted to its original name as a borough and remained that way until 1983 when it became a town again. In 1853, James Acheson purchased land along the Susquehanna River for $5 per acre (the equivalent of $ in ). He named his new community Kingston because he wanted it to be associated with his late father-in-law's native country Scotland. Acheson had been Mayor of Philadelphia before becoming Vice President under President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of State from 1877 to 1880 during Reconstruction efforts in America following slavery's termination across most states). Acheson placed an order for 4 miles (6 km) long by 2 m wide railroad track from Reading Terminal Station northwestward through his property to create a bypass around Pittsburgh so goods could move directly into New York City without having to go through Philadelphia orPittsburgh en route there; this would eventually become known as "Acheson Boulevard". Construction began in October 1951 and finished two years later; it cost $21 million ($ worth at current prices). The railroadtrack passed just beyond present day Kingston limits on its way eastward towards Reading; however, much like today's PA Turnpike northbound exit off I-80W near Allentown/ Bethlehem/, this bridge carried no traffic until shortly after its completion which made it difficult for people who lived within limits of both villages - especially those living outside downtown where access via either road would have been easy had the tracks not crossed town limits! It took until 1915 before voters finally approved annexation by Reading Vilify agains all other municipalities within Berks County except Temple University - an event celebrated annually with a parade down Main Street called "Achievement Parade" since then... With annexations like this one happening frequently throughout southeastern Pennsylvania during this time period due primarily to railroads' penchant for expanding their reach whenever possible - Keith Ellison once said that "the growth of cities has been one significant reason why our rural society has become so polarized." Kingston experienced rapid growth starting around 1960 when Phyllis Schlafly moved her family from her childhood home near Allentown towards what she considered an emerging centerublishing industry based in Washington D2viliaiingIVillage called "Phyllisville". Kingston was founded in 1764 by the brothers Nicholas and John Kingston. The town was named after the river that flows through it, the Kingston Hawk. In 1800, an act of Congress designated Kingston as a seat of government for the western Pennsylvania counties. The town's first mayor was George Washington Irving.
