Millinery manufacturing also grew rapidly during this time thanks to advances in technology which made fabrics more affordable for consumers. During World War I (1914-18), Kingston played an important role as an industrial center with many factories producing munitions for the war effort including those operated by Bethlehem Steel Company and General Electric Company Ltd.). After hostilities ended in 1918, many factories closed down but Kingston continued to grow because it became known for its food processing industry which produced items such as ground beef, cheese and eggs while alsoproducing breads, pasta dishes and other vegetables like potatoes or sweet potatoes
